Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | July 2, 2026

A daily roundup of Jets, Moose coverage — all the pro hockey news that matters in Manitoba and beyond.

Note: Yesterday was Free Agency Day which usually isn’t too electric in Winnipeg but that changed a bit as the Jets started the day by signing goalie Stuart Skinner to a two-year contract. He spoke for almost 18 minutes about this opportunity which you can watch here. They also made a depth signed of forward Noah Gregor. And then later in the evening they announced that they had landed left-shot defenceman Mario Ferarro on a three-year deal. We will hear from him this morning so stay tuned for that media availability here and on our YouTube channel.

Note II: It was also a day that players from the Jets/Moose organization signed with other teams. In total seven players from the two Manitoba based pro clubs signed with other teams including Colin Miller (Lausanne HC), Luke Schenn (Canucks), Dylan Anhorn (Blackhawks), Eric Comrie (Sharks), Jacob Bryson (Red Wings), Mason Shaw (Wild) and Ville Heinola (Golden Knights). Still a few Jets/Moose UFAs who could sign new deals this week and we’ll keep you updated as to where they end up.

Note III: While all of the above was going on there was still Day 3 of Jets Development Camp down at hockey for all centre as the prospects were put through their paces doing the beep test. We kept the Swedish theme going with a conversation with Viktor Klingsell (2025 5th) which you can watch here. We will have plenty more coverage from Day 4 which gets underway at 10 AM with Team practicing followed by Team B hitting the ice at 11 AM. Media availabilities get underway at 12:30 PM and we will have that covered here and on our YouTube channel.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Skinner signing adds to Winnipeg Jets goalie intrigue. Adding the 27-year old netminder certainly added an unexpected twist on the morning of free agency. Of course it doesn’t answer the questions about Connor Hellebuyck.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets sign shut-down defender Ferraro. One way to improve what happens in front of the net is by improving the quality of the defenders and this was a move that certainly did just that.

Winnipeg Sun: Skinner ready to compete for net, with or without Hellebuyck. Talk about a positive attitude from a guy who has been to the Stanley Cup Finals twice. There was no sense of entitlement and you’d be hard pressed to realize he’s been in the NHL for five seasons already.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Jets’ bet on Skinner leaves Connor Hellebuyck’s questions unanswered so far. (Paywall). Murat gives his thoughts on what happened on Wednesday.

Jets video:

TSN: Does Skinner signing impact Hellebuyck’s future in WinnipegBryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan were joined by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger to discuss whether or not Stuart Skinner signing with the Winnipeg Jets means Connor Hellebuyck’s days are numbered.

TSN: How does Skinner signing impact Hellebuyck’s future with the Winnipeg Jets? Is Stuart Skinner being brought to Winnipeg as a backup to Connor Hellebuyck or as a replacement? The TSN Goalie panel discusses what Skinner’s signing means for Hellebuyck moving forward and whether or not he is a good fit with the Jets.

Sportsnet: Reaction to the Winnipeg Jets signing of Stuart Skinner. The panel reacts to the Jets safeguarding themselves against a potential future without Connor Hellebuyck by signing Stuart Skinner to a 2-year contract worth $7.5M ($3.25M AAV).

Sportsnet: What kind of package will Jets need to move Hellebuyck? The Hockey Central Signing Season panel discusses the future of star goalie Connor Hellebuyck, and where he might be interested in heading if the Winnipeg Jets decide to make a move.
