Report: Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien working towards mutual contract termination

Since the beginning of the 2019-20 season, Dustin Byfuglien’s future with the Winnipeg Jets has been a huge uncertainty. It was back in September when folks woke up to the news that the big man on defence had been granted a leave of absence from the team as he was pondering his future which was followed about a week later by a procedural move by the Jets to suspend him.

Since September it has been a steady stream of news ranging from a growing sense of optimism in mid October, to the report later that month that Byfuglien had undergone surgery on his ankle and that was followed in early November by another report indicating this situation was heading to arbitration.

In early January there was a Winnipeg Free Press report that Byfuglien had reached the point in his rehab that he was ready to test the ankle out on the ice.  But three weeks later the report was he was still not skating.

Which brings us to today where the news broke via TSN hockey insider Frank Seravali who said this:

The Jets and defenceman Dustin Byfuglien are working toward a mutual contract termination over the next several days, according to multiple sources, which would formally end his suspension and bring to a close the grievance Byfuglien filed in November.

Read Frank’s full report here.

Quite the way to start a Monday.

Update:

Hustler spoke to Frank today on The Afternoon Ride on TSN 1290 Winnipeg about his report. To listen click here.
