The Jets overcame a three goal deficit to force tonight’s game to overtime and earn a single point but eventually they fell to the Washington Capitals in the fifth round of the shootout. The Jets now sit at 70 points with an overall record of 32-27-6 as they finish the four game road trip with a 1-2-1 record.

For those who would like to take a deeper dive into the advanced stats here are the results from the game via Natural Stat Trick.

Notable:

After Alex Ovechkin was honoured in a pre-game ceremony for scoring his 700th goal he got started on the road to 800 with his 701st to open the scoring in this game.

Tonight was the ninth straight time the Jets have given up the opening goal of a game.

After going down by three goals the Jets fought their way back after Nikolaj Ehlers (23) scored in the 2nd and Kyle Connor (31) and Mark Scheifele (27) scored in the 3rd to tie it up.

Cody Eakin picked up his first point as a member of the Jets.

Coach Maurice:  What turned in his hockey club’s favour to get a point?  Can this be a catalyst for the team?  Update on Sami Niku?  Playing soccer as a warm up.  Did it feel like a one shot game in the 3rd?  Moving Kyle Connor up with 55/26 and using three forwards to start OT.  What has he liked about Cody Eakin?  The hits on Pionk/Laine.

Health Update:

Coach Maurice said this about Sami Niku who was scheduled to play but didn’t due to an injury he sustained warming up playing soccer “It wasn’t the football.  That’s all I’ll admit to.  There was no football being played.  Ya he got hurt and couldn’t go.  We’ll get it looked at tomorrow when we get back.”  When asked about the nature of the injury he added “I know exactly what it is.  Lower-body is what I’ll give ya.  But I won’t know the extent of it until we get it looked at tomorrow.  But there was no 50-50 on that one.  He couldn’t play.”
