Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The quiet time across the NHL is about to come to an end. Rookies will head to BC at the end of this week for the Young Stars Tournament (roster here) and Training Camp will soon be underway. The Jets have just one RFA (Declan Chisholm) remaining to be signed.

Note II: We’ve now concluded our IC Summer Series of chats with Jets prospects/Moose players. You can watch/listen to all five which have now been posted. We began with Danny Zhilkin (watch it here) followed by Chaz Lucius (watch it hereJeff Malott (watch it here), Daniel Torgersson (watch it here) and then we concluded with Henri Nikkanen (watch it here).

Jets news:

The Athletic: What still having Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele around means for the Winnipeg Jets. (Paywall). Maybe I am in lala land but I can’t see a scenario where either player is looking at a short-term deal aside from maybe a one-year extension to create a bit more breathing space for the organization and to get the players closer to a time when the salary cap is rumoured to be bumping up in a significant way. I still think there would be a lot of risk for both players to do something short-term.

The Athletic: One burning question for every NHL team heading into training camp. (Paywall). No surprise that for the Jets it pertains to 55 and 37.

Illegal Curve Hockey: Saturday Podcast. On the first show of the season we discussed the status of Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck including recent comments from Elliotte Freidman on 32 Thoughts Podcast/Pierre LeBrun in The Athletic. The decision to name a new captain and the choice between Josh Morrissey and Adam Lowry (and whether not being named captain could have an impact on Mark Scheifele). Whether Cole Perfetti or Gabe Vilardi will grab hold of the 2C spot. The logjam on the backend. We were joined by Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press and Ryan S Clark of ESPN.
