Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The quiet time across the NHL is about to come to an end. The Jets have just one RFA (Declan Chisholm) remaining to be signed.

Note II: We’ve now concluded our IC Summer Series of chats with Jets prospects/Moose players. You can watch/listen to all five which have now been posted. We began with Danny Zhilkin (watch it here) followed by Chaz Lucius (watch it here) Jeff Malott (watch it here), Daniel Torgersson (watch it here) and then concluded with Henri Nikkanen (watch it here).

Note III: It may be a tad early to boast about our predictions that Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele would remain Jets and could even sign extensions but sure seems to be a lot of that type of speculation right now. Check out what Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman had to say on the 32 Thoughts Podcast and Pierre LeBrun/Michael Russo wrote in their column for The Athletic saying that Cheveldayoff indicated there have been “ongoing dialog with both players throughout the offseason and indicated they’ll meet once camp begins”.

Note IV: The Young Stars Tournament gets underway next week in BC and the Jets revealed their roster which you can see here.

Note V: The Illegal Curve Hockey Show is back from summer break! Join us this morning at 9:00am CT for 2 hours of comprehensive Jets discussions, getting you ready for the upcoming start of Training Camp & the 2023-24 season. Join us here.

Jets news:

Sportsnet: One player who needs to deliver for each Central Division team. That’s a lot to put on the shoulders of Gabe Vilardi.

The Athletic: Are Hellebuyck and Scheifele staying put? (Paywall). Nothing really new here but as it shows above it seems like the duo could be in Jets uniforms well beyond this season. Or possibly it’s a big, giant smokescreen. Who knows.

TheScore: Jets GM: ‘Our singular focus is winning’ with Hellebuyck, Scheifele. If you don’t have an Athletic subscription then check out this article.

NHL.com: Josh Morrissey enters new season looking to build off career year. He will be a huge piece of the puzzle as the club will need a repeat of what he accomplished last season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Josh Morrissey excited to get going. (Paywall). As the player with the longest commitment to the city I thought he would be named the next captain of the Jets although lots of folks believe it could be Adam Lowry. I think the edge goes to 44 although I could easily see them giving it to 17.

Jets video:

Winnipeg Sports Talk: Neal Pionk on his summer, preparations for training camp and the upcoming season. The Jets defenceman joined Andrew “Hustler” Paterson on Winnipeg Sports Talk Daily for a conversation about his summer, the new additions to the team and the upcoming season.

Hockey in Manitoba news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Dante Giannuzzi ready and willing to put in the work. (Paywall). Missed this from the other day on the young Manitoban who has a phenomenal work ethic.
