The Jets are in a stretch where they have lost a number of players due to injury. This list includes Logan Stanley (October 24th) who was scheduled back on November 1st to miss a few weeks due to a slight foot fracture, Morgan Barron (October 30th) to wrist surgery which could cost him 4-5 weeks, Mason Appleton (November 13th) who also needed wrist surgery but has a longer recovery time at 8-12 weeks. Add to this mix the curious case of Nikolaj Ehlers (October 17th) who was initially seen as day-to-day (including being a game-time decision for the game against the Avs on the 19th) but which has since morphed to almost a month (13 games) without the dynamic winger. Yesterday Jets bench boss Rick Bowness had this somewhat ominous update.
There is also a question mark with respect to Dylan DeMelo who missed his first game of the season last night. The Jets defenceman missed practice on Tuesday, took part in practice on Wednesday and then didn’t play Thursday night. With Winnipeg off today his status won’t be updated until Saturday.
Which brings us to last night during the TSN broadcast of the Jets and Ducks game. During the Insider Trading segment host Glenn Schiiler asked insider Darren Dreger what the latest news was regarding Nikolaj Ehlers and the other forwards out for Winnipeg.
Dreger indicated:
“Nikolaj Ehlers has had several consultations with a few different doctors and the reality is they don’t know yet. Yes, surgery could be an option to get Nikolaj Ehlers healthy again. This has been a slow healing process for them but surgery has not yet been determined. Three of Winnipeg’s top nine forwards are out. You’re looking at Ehlers, Appleton and Barron so on the short term they hope that someone internally can step up to fill the void but obviously they’re also considering some trade options as well.”.
