Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest Jets and Moose news, video and audio.

Note:  Yesterday may have been the craziest day in the ten year history of the Jets 2.0 and I don’t simply say that before it was an 18 hour day for yours truly. It began like most Saturdays do for us with the morning papers followed by the Illegal Curve Hockey Show. Just after 9:30 AM the news broke of the trade call happening between Winnipeg and Columbus and all hell broke loose with the blockbuster deal becoming the sole focus for the morning and most of the afternoon even though yesterday also happened to be a Jets gameday. Eventually we focused on that contest which saw the Jets sweep their three-game mini series with the Senators by a final score of 6-3.

Media availability: Blake Wheeler/Nikolaj Ehlers | Coach Paul Maurice | GM Kevin CheveldayoffJack Roslovic | Patrik Laine.

Note II:  This morning will kick off with a media availability for newest Jets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois at 10:30 AM. We will have it covered and bring you it when it is available.  Stay tuned.

Note III:  Like yesterday today is a gameday as the Jets will face off against the Oilers for the first time this season. No morning skate but there might be an availability so stay tuned for our pre-game report.  Puck drop is at 8 PM CT and be sure to check back once the final buzzer goes for our post-game recap including interviews with players and coach Maurice.

Jets news:

Global News:  Pierre-Luc Dubois not looking back after trade to Winnipeg JetsBased on a chat he had last night with Kelly Moore.  As note II indicates we will be chatting with him this morning.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets end emotional day with win over young Senators. The hockey game was almost a bit of an afterthought after all that had happened during the day.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets fans weigh on on Laine dealAs we learned yesterday doing four hours of live radio during the moments the trade was announced there are plenty of folks who are happy, plenty who are upset and folks who are willing to reserve judgement until after they’ve been able to witness what happens.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets failed with Laine, top to bottom. It all started off so promising one weekend in June back in 2016 in Buffalo, NY and yet under five years later a supremely talented goal scorer left town on Saturday.  Something stinks in Denmark (which is odd considering Laine is Finnish) according to Paul.

Sportsnet: Jets’ Cheveldayoff flips risk-averse script with bold Dubois-Laine trade. Last summer, which feels like a lifetime ago, we had said this was likely the most important year of his career as GM of the Jets. He certainly threw off his cautios label with this blockbuster deal.

Sportsnet: Analyzing what Jets get in Dubois, Blue Jackets in Laine and RoslovicPlenty to digest in this analysis piece on all the players featured in the big trade.

Sportsnet: Why Laine-Dubois blockbuster makes sense for Jets and Blue Jackets It is why I was saying on our show yesterday that it is possible for both teams to come out as winners with this deal.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets defeat Senators 6-3. (Paywall).  If you’re the Winnipeg Jets you are happy to have added another two points to your standings bank.

Winnipeg Free Press: Laine, Roslovic leave with good memories; excited about new opportunities with Columbus. (Paywall).  Interesting symmetry with this trade as it brings together Patrik Laine with the only Finnish GM in the NHL and brings the Columbus kid Jack Roslovic back home.

Winnipeg Free Press: Laine blockbuster: Ehlers emotional, Wheeler stoic but sincere. (Paywall).  As I suggested in my notes above it was clear that it was the type of day that had an impact on everyone.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Why Pierre-Luc Dubois is a good fit for the Jets’ roster, now and in the future. (Paywall).  There are a lot of reasons this is a good acquisition by Winnipeg which Murat outlines here.

The Athletic:  Jets and Blue Jackets swap stars Patrik Laine and Pierre-Luc Dubois. (Paywall).  They analyze the deals and provide some grades.

CBC:  Laine’s departure has Jets faithful focused on loss — despite lucrative gainsSimilar to the Trouba trade I don’t think it is helpful to judge this deal before some time has passed for it to be properly evaluated.

CBC:  The Patrik Laine trade: Yet another unhappy Finnish for WinnipegMore analysis of the trade that reverberated around the NHL.

Jets video:

TSN:  Ehlers’s contribution to the Jets goes beyond just his offence.  A huge day for Winnipeg was capped by an impressive third consecutive victory over Ottawa and at the heart of the win was Nikolaj Ehlers, who said goodbye to his good friend Patrik Laine earlier in the day. TSN Hockey analyst Mike Johnson breaks down his game.

TSN:  Jets now have the best centre ice in North division, arguably the NHLCraig Button explains that with the acquisition of Pierre-Luc Dubois, the Jets now have the best centre ice in the North division, and arguably in the entire NHL, and also states that Dubois impacts the game in more ways than Patrik Laine.

Sportsnet: Pierre-Luc Dubois details why he requested trade from Columbus. Ron MacLean was joined by the newest member of the Winnipeg Jets Pierre-Luc Dubois, detailing why he requested a trade from Columbus, what he expects from playing in a new city and more.

Blue Jackets: Patrik Laine first media availability as a member of the Blue Jackets. Cue up the cannon which could be a reference to Patrik Laine’s shot or the cannon inside Nationwide Arena. Yesterday the former Jets winger spoke following his trade to Columbus.

Blue Jackets: Jack Roslovic first media availability as a member of the Blue Jackets. The Columbus product will now have a chance to play in his hometown after being dealt to the Blue Jackets as part of the Laine/Dubois trade. Here is Jack Roslovic’s first media availability as a member of the CBJ.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets Setting – The day Patrik Laine was traded. Sun sports editor Ted Wyman and hockey writer Scott Billeck discuss the biggest trade in Winnipeg in the past 25 years after Patrik Laine was traded alongside Jack Roslovic to the Columbus Blue Jackets for centre Pierre-Luc Dubois and a 2022 third-round draft pick.

Jets audio:

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  I love this trade for the Winnipeg Jets.  TSN Sr. Reporter Frank Seravalli joined Andrew “Hustler” Paterson and Rick Ralph on the Afternoon Ride. They discussed why he thinks the Jets won the Laine trade for Pierre Luc Dubois, what fans can expect to see from PLD and why Patrik Laine wasn’t a long term fit in Winnipeg.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Jets paid an extreme price to get a very sought after centremanHockey Insider Darren Dreger joins TSN 1290 Winnipeg to explain how the trade between the Jets and Blue Jackets came together, says there should be zero concern about Pierre-Luc Dubois’ effort and commitment to his new team, discuss if Winnipeg has a chance of retaining him long-term, and more.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Deals of this magnitude don’t happen very often. Hockey Insider Darren Dreger joined us live on The Illegal Curve Hockey Show breaking down the blockbuster Patrik Laine trade, sending the Finnish sniper, along with fellow forward, Jack Roslovic, to the Columbus Blue Jackets for center, Pierre Luc- Dubois and a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Dreger discussed how the trade came together, the timeline of the deal, what Jets fans can expect from their new center as well as the excitement from Pierre Luc-Dubois to join the Winnipeg Jets.
