While folks in Winnipeg are waiting around for RFAs Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine (as well as goalie Eric Comrie) to get new deals done with the Jets, today Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun spoke to defenceman Josh Morrissey who isn’t set to become an RFA (with arbitration rights) until next season. The Jets 2013 1st round pick is set to make $3,150,000 for the 2019-20 season in the final year of the two-year deal he signed back on September 16, 2018.
Here is what he had to say:
Josh Morrissey said he’s had preliminary discussions regarding a contract extension. Morrissey says he wants to be in Winnipeg long term. He will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. #NHLJets

Josh Morrissey said chats regarding a extension have happened in the past couple of weeks and throughout the summer. Nothing imminent, but he said this: “I’d love to get something done. I’d love to play here throughout my career.” #NHLJets

A bit more from Morrissey:
“I still have another year left on this deal,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter, I guess, if the deal gets done any time before you walk into the arbitration room, if that was something that was going to happen.

And a bit more from Morrissey:
“But I’m hopeful and I would like to get it done and I would like to be playing here in Winnipeg. I just feel like it’s a great fit for me as a player and a person.”

That has to be music to fans ears as Morrissey is the type of player you want to lock up for a long, long time.
