Jonathan Toews set to announce retirement after 16-year NHL career and return to the Winnipeg Jets

After working hard to get back to the NHL, the Winnipegger is hanging up his skates.

In late May of 2025, we learned that Winnipegger Jonathan Toews was committed to returning to the NHL after a two-and-a-half-year absence due to health issues. The following month, it was confirmed that he would be making that return with his hometown Jets. He even took to Instagram to share his excitement in joining the Jets.

He played all 82 games for Winnipeg, which was quite a feat given the condensed schedule because of the Olympics. It was even more remarkable considering he hadn’t accomplished that since the 2018-19 season. He got a chance to play against the Blackhawks in Chicago for the first time which was quite a memorable experience.

The question of retirement came up during his end-of-season media availability, but he said he wanted to take some time to reflect on his future. It did seem likely that the Winnipegger was calling it a career as he hugged teammates goodbye and signed sticks for them.

On June 3, Darren Dreger reported “at this point it seems likely Jonathan Toews is retiring.”

Today, we learned that the Jets would be holding a closed (except to media and special guests) announcement at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex which sure seemed to confirm the report that he would be retiring. Shortly thereafter Dreger, along with Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press confirmed that it is indeed for him to announce his retirement from hockey.

What a remarkable career the 16-year NHL veteran had across 15 seasons in Chicago and one in Winnipeg. He won three Stanley Cups in six years, captured two Olympic gold medals, earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and accomplished much more. He was also a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy which is given to a player who “best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, dedication to hockey” although in the end it went to the Avs Gabriel Landeskog.

He will be in the Hall of Fame but now the question is what is next for Toews? Might he join the Jets organization in some capacity? We will have the full presser tomorrow covered here and on our YouTube channel.
