Darren Dreger’s comments point to an extension for Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff

The Saskatchewan product has led the Jets since 2011 and is set to become the NHL’s longest-tenured GM.

Over 15 years ago, the Jets hired Kevin Cheveldayoff to be the general manager of the hockey club that was relocating from Atlanta to Winnipeg ahead of the 2011-12 season.

Since that day on June 8, 2011, the Saskatchewan product has continued to lead the prairie-based franchise. During his tenure, the Jets have qualified for the playoffs eight times and advanced to the Western Conference Final once, falling to the Golden Knights in 2018.

Unlike player contract extensions, the Jets generally do not announce new deals for members of their executive team. The last time news surfaced regarding an extension for Cheveldayoff was on May 1, 2022, when Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press reported that he had signed a three-year extension.

Which brings us to yesterday, when TSN insider Darren Dreger was discussing the Jets and indicated that the current GM is “in the early days of a contract extension”. While no details regarding term were provided, the comment would suggest the Jets GM has signed a new deal with the organization.

With Blues GM Doug Armstrong retiring after this season, Cheveldayoff will be the longest-tenured general manager in the NHL.
