Note: Despite a strong opening period the Jets looked like a team that had played five games in seven days as the Oilers took over the game in the 2nd period. However the home side pushed back in the 3rd and looked like they’d come away with two points until Edmonton scored late to tie it and then won it with 0.7 seconds left in the game. The loss drops Winnipeg to 4-2-0 on the season and you can check out the post-game recap here. The team is scheduled to practice today. Stay tuned for the Practice Report.
Note II: Check out Pierre-Luc Dubois first media availability where he shows off plenty of Winnipeg knowledge including dropped a De Luca’s reference. You can watch his chat from Sunday morning here. Update: We also heard from his dad Eric who is an assistant coach with the Manitoba Moose. Watch it here.
Note III: The Moose will kick off training camp today as they prepare for their season which is set to get underway on February 5th. Of course they don’t have a number of players who are still in quarantine nor a regular season schedule but they do have a training camp schedule and roster which will be closed to the public.
Jets news:
Global News: Laine leaves lasting legacy in Winnipeg. Ken reflects on what the 2016 2nd overall pick meant to this city.
Winnipeg Sun: Stastny fine with giving it a go on the wing. No surprise that the veteran centre is prepared to do what it takes for the club to win. At this point in his career he wants to add Stanley Cup champ to his resume.
Winnipeg Sun: Oilers score last-second goal to beat Jets in see-saw battle. It is probably one time the Jets were happy not to have fans in the building cause the faithful would not have been happy to see the home side drop that contest with 0.7 seconds to go in the game.
Winnipeg Sun: Dubois already feels right at home in Winnipeg after joining Jets in Laine trade. It was interesting to learn he came to Winnipeg last year when the season was paused to live with his parents (Moose assistant coach Eric being his dad).
Sportsnet: Jets’ emotional weekend ends with hollow feeling as Oilers stymie late rally. Ken wraps up one of the craziest weekends in the ten year history of the Jets 2.0.
Sportsnet: Dubois stays true to himself, prepares for ‘new chapter’ in Winnipeg. He was consistent in what he had to say and he seems very eager to get going with his new club.
NHL.com: Dubois says being with Jets ‘already feels like home’ after one day. Comfort can go a long way in helping a player get integrated quickly. He certainly seems eager to become fully immersed in the Jets systems during his quarantine.
Winnipeg Free Press: Jets suffer 4-3 brutal loss to Oilers. (Paywall). When the Oilers tied it up after the Jets took a lead late in the 3rd this game felt like it would go to OT and both teams would at least get a point. Instead Edmonton took the first meeting of the season cleanly in regulation.
Winnipeg Free Press: Dubois welcomes new chapter with Jets. (Paywall). Earnest and eager would be two words I’d use to describe the third overall pick from 2016 as he looks to really seize this opportunity in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg Free Press: Laine trade looks bad on Jets. (Paywall). There seem to be a lot of unknown variables to this saga. Mike tries to peel back the layers of the onion.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Pierre-Luc Dubois keen on making strong first impression in Winnipeg. (Paywall). He got off to a good start with what he has said but the true testament will be what he does on the ice.
The Athletic: 10 NHL executives give their takes on the Dubois-Laine trade. (Paywall). If you put stock in what NHL folks say then the Jets did quite well based on this article.
Jets video:
TSN: Oilers’ line changes pay off, fatigue may have caught up to Jets. The line changes that Dave Tippett implemented against the Jets seemed to pay off and TSN Hockey analyst Jamie McLennan explains how bumping Jesse Puljujarvi to the top line gives him a chance to utilize his size and speed and also discusses why he believes the Jets’ schedule may have caught up to them in this game.
TSN: Pierre-Luc Dubois is embracing the fresh start in Winnipeg and is excited with the ‘amazing opportunity’ ahead. Still mum on what led to his desire to move on from the Blue Jackets, Dubois isn’t feeling any added pressure to replace Patrik Laine and is confident his all-around game will shine with the Jets. Sara Orlesky has more.
