On Saturday we heard via Elliotte Friedman on Saturday Headlines that a decision regarding Dustin Byfuglien isn’t expected anytime soon.

Yesterday on TSN 1050 Toronto Bob McKenzie was chatting on the Overdrive program with Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan and the topic of the Jets depleted defence came up in advance of their game against the Penguins.

McKenzie began by stating that the Jets are likely standing pat with the current players they’ve got on defence both because the players available “may not be that much better than some of the guys they’ve got and “the players that are available make too much money” which would require something seismic (i.e. trading a top winger) which he said “right now they aren’t prepared to do that.”.

The conversation turned to Dustin Byfuglien and how he could help the Jets due to their defensive woes.  McKenzie added “Reportedly he didn’t skate or train all summer.  And he’s not had a training camp.  And you’re coming off a bad ankle.”

That certainly doesn’t sound good for business but it does explain the lack of a timeline if the Jets want 33 to spend this time getting his skating legs under him.

You can listen to the chat here (Jets talk starts at the 9:08).
