Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | September 25, 2026

Note: Some big news on Thursday as the Jets now officially encompass both the 1.0 and 2.0 versions after the NHL announced that the statistical history of the Winnipeg Jets will include both iterations of the franchise. While folks in Manitoba have always treated the two teams as interlinked, those outside the province have finally come around to that viewpoint and made it official. Which means the 2026-27 season will see Mark Scheifele chasing down Dale Hawerchuk’s franchise leads in goals (7) and points (22). And we can officially stop saying 1.0 and 2.0. Although worth noting that this would make the upcoming season the 33rd year of Winnipeg Jets NHL hockey, which doesn’t even include the seven years of WHA Jets hockey.

Note II: While the reminiscing was going on, there was still a day of training camp to watch on Thursday. The Jets focused heavily on special teams as they look to get that area of their game back on track. Check out all that was happening on Day 8 here.

Note III: It’s a Jets game day today as they wrap up the pre-season this evening in Colorado against the Avalanche. It is, for all intents and purposes, the final day of training camp as the team will stick around in Colorado for a few days of team bonding after the game. They will skate in Winnipeg this morning at 10 AM CT out at hockey for all centre and we will have it covered. Puck drop is at 7:30 PM CT and the game will be streamed on the Jets site. Note IV: It’s actually a double game day as the Moose are also in pre-season action, taking on the (Iowa) Wild in Minnesota this afternoon. This is a significant event as Manitoba has not played an exhibition game against an AHL opponent since 2019, making it a much better opportunity to evaluate players and prepare for the regular season. Puck drop is at 2 PM CT and the game can only be heard on radio.

Sportsnet: Jets’ Viggo Bjorck facing hefty expectations, big-league adjustments. There is a huge weight on this young man’s shoulders but every indication we’ve seen is that he can handle the expectations. While I don’t think you should expect him to be a top centre in the NHL this season, the kid really does seem to posses something special. 

Winnipeg Sun: Jets looking to revive special teams. A big reason for the drop last season were the special teams. Winnipeg had the 24th ranked PP and the 21st ranked PK in the league.

Winnipeg Sun: ‘Extra motivation’: Scheifele eyeing Jets all-time records. I did find it humorous when 55 suggested this suddenly provides clarity because he has always been focused on chasing down his mentor, Dale Hawerchuk. I suspect the media room full of mostly born-and-bred Winnipeggers understood the 1.0 history quite well long before Thursday’s announcement..

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets focus on power play and penalty kill as shortened pre-season winds down. (Paywall). A big way to secure points or at least not drop them will see this team improve in both areas which will require the coaching staff to be adaptive and the players to execute to their best ability.

Winnipeg Free Press: No more Jets 1.0 or 2.0: League announces all eras of Winnipeg’s club to be merged. (Paywall). As I’ve been saying for years, Manitobans or Jets fans outside this market, did not need anything to become “official” in order to connect the dots between the history. Look at the people who populate the Jets alumni, the names in the rafters and you can see that it’s been this way since the return in 2011. 

The Athletic Winnipeg: NHL officially consolidates Winnipeg Jets statistical history. (Paywall). It is a decision that makes sense on every level and should make it much easier for folks who did not live through the 1.0 era to appreciate just how close some current Jets are to the franchise’s all-time marks.
