Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | October 9, 2026

A daily roundup of Jets, Moose coverage and all the pro hockey news that matters in Manitoba and beyond.

Note: The Jets held an optional practice on Thursday as they look to keep the momentum rolling following three straight wins and points in all four games to start the season. They’ll look to keep things going tonight when they welcome the Ducks to town. Winnipeg’s morning skate gets underway at 10:30 AM CT, so stay tuned for our pre-game report with the latest, including whether Josh Morrissey will be available. Puck drop is at 7 PM CT.

Note II: This evening, after the final buzzer sounds between Winnipeg and Anaheim, we want you to be part of the conversation on the Illegal Curve Post-Game Show as we discuss and analyze the results of the game starting around 9:40 PM CT.

Note III: The Moose are also in action tonight as they kick off the road portion of their schedule tonight in Grand Rapids when they face the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. Puck drop is at 6 PM CT.

Note IV: In addition to joining us tonight, we hope you’ll tune in tomorrow morning at 9 AM CT as we celebrate 16 years of Saturdays on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show. We’ll look back at some favourite memories, talk plenty of Jets hockey and bring this longstanding tradition to a close before beginning an exciting new chapter with our daily show starting Tuesday, October 13th at 3 PM CT. One last Saturday morning together!

Jets news:

Sportsnet: With top line rolling, Jets still searching for more depth scoring. Seems like the GABBA line is due to breakthrough.

Winnipeg Sun: Morrissey’s status hangs over Jets’ matchup with Ducks. We obviously didn’t get anything in our media availability with assistant coach Davis Payne on Thursday so we will have to wait and see if they have made a recall from the Moose.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bjorck banking on patience that first NHL point will come. (Paywall). The kid has made some very nice plays and had some very good looks. It really seems like it’s simply a matter of when he gets his first point.

Winnipeg Free Press: Get to know your Jet: Mario Ferraro. (Paywall). Mike has a fun new feature which introduces you to players but from a non-hockey angle.

CTV News: Meet the Manitoban behind the designs of Stuart Skinner’s new goalie masks. Interesting to see the local connections and to learn about this process.

Sportsnet: Why Jets should use Hughes trade return as benchmark for Hellebuyck deal. NHL analyst Sam Cosentino joins FAN Hockey Show to gauge the latest temperature in Winnipeg for a Connor Hellebuyck deal, why GM Cheveldayoff should use the Quinn Hughes deal as a benchmark in any return, and how he has more leverage with the team winning.

Sportsnet: 32 Thoughts Podcast – On the Winnipeg Jets jetting out of the starting gates. In this edition of 32 Thoughts, Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman begin the podcast by talking about the most impressive Canadian team to start the NHL season. They spend about ten minutes talking about the Jets this morning. Other than the assessment of what Winnipeg has done so far and their motivation (us against the world). Friedman does speculate about the future of Nino Niederreiter. He does wonder if because the veteran cannot get into the lineup, and because he is in a contract year, if he may wanna go somewhere else.
