Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | June 30, 2026

A daily roundup of Jets, Moose coverage — all the pro hockey news that matters in Manitoba and beyond.

Note: The Jets got Development Camp underway with 32 players and prospects invited to Winnipeg to take part this week. On Monday they did off ice testing and we had a chance to speak to a pair of new prospects in first-rounder Viggo Björck (watch here) and seventh-rounder Alofa Tunoa Ta’amu (watch here). Today, the goalies will hit the ice at 9:30 AM CT with the rest of the players skating at 10 AM. We have a media availability at 12:30 pm so be sure you’re subscribing to our YouTube channel as well as check on this site later this afternoon for latest news from hfac.

Note II: Yesterday, we learned that the Gus Bus was being moved to Pittsburgh as it was the day that NHL teams had to qualify their restricted free agents or else they’d become unrestricted and free to sign with any team on July 1st. Accordingly, Winnipeg made a swap with the Penguins sending David Gustafsson east for defenceman Jack St. Ivany. In the end the NHL club of Winnipeg chose to qualify two of three players on their list.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Long to-do list for Jets. (Paywall). Plenty of holes on this roster and with free agency around the corner, Mike and Ken take a look at some of the options to try to fill them.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets draft pick Bjorck touches down in Winnipeg for development camp. (Paywall). Based on the comments we are seeing on social media it seems clear that Manitoba is in the midst of Viggo Mania.

Winnipeg Free Press: Defenceman Ta’Amu already making franchise history. (Paywall). He seemed like a sensible young man who takes a lot of pride in his heritage and being the first ever player of Samoan heritage drafted into the NHL. And most importantly he has some serious tools if his play can develop into being an NHLer one day.

Winnipeg Sun: Ready or not, here comes Jets’ Björck. I suspect there will be a big crowd on hand to watch his first ever skate in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Sun: Old-school trailblazer: Jets’ Ta’amu wants to be hard to play against. When discussing his attributes he said “I think people don’t like playing against me”. Suspect there are lots of Jets fans who wouldn’t mind seeing that type of Dman protecting the front of the net.

TSN: The questions to weigh in a Hellebuyck trade. Meaning if you are Winnipeg now is the time to deal him and if you’re tying to acquire him, now is also the time to do so.

Jets audio:

Sportsnet: 32 Thoughts PodcastElliotte Friedman indicated that he believes that the Jets and Sabres are still talking. He said that he believes that Hellebuyck was fully willing to waive to go to Buffalo. He also indicated that the list of teams he’d be willing to go to is not as restrictive as some other players in similar situations.
