Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets had a newsy day on Monday as Dominic Toninato was able to clear waivers which was a move the organization made so they could take David Gustafsson off IR, after which they loaned him to the Moose for conditioning purposes. There was also some Ville Heinola talk (here & here) with plenty of curiosity as to his progress in the AHL and when he might be recalled, which the bench boss of Winnipeg poured cold water on (for now). They have another day of practice this morning down at Canada Life which gets underway at 11 AM CST. Stay tuned for the Practice Report.

Note II: As indicated above the Moose got a big boost when you consider their forward lines and then add in Dominic Toninato and David Gustafsson. Neither player skated with the team in Calgary on Monday but both are expected to play tonight when Manitoba takes on the Wranglers. Morning skate gets going at 12:15 PM CST and puck drop is at 8 PM CST.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Jets five-game skid viewed as a harsh, but good reminder. Scott chatted with Nikolaj Ehlers and head coach Rick Bowness to get their thoughts on the benefits of dealing with adversity.

Winnipeg Sun: “It wouldn’t be fair:” Bowness says Heinola not ready for NHL call-up. In his latest Notebook, Scott wrote about Heinola, Gustafsson and Dylan DeMelo’s thoughts on the Rielly/Greig situation.

Winnipeg Free Press: Perfetti stays sharp on defence while trying to rediscover offensive game. (Paywall). We know he’s dealing with a wrist injury and then recently head coach Rick Bowness spoke about him playing on the right side so it’s clear the 2020 first rounder is facing some adversity during this stretch of the season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets won’t rush Heinola into lineup. (Paywall). I was asked on twitter for my thoughts and they amount to this: “He’s played 12 games. Has he looked good. Yes. Are there instances when he looks like a guy who missed months. Also yes. I was of the opinion that he would need at least a few months with the Moose before he was sufficiently conditioned.” And I am sticking with that thought. The organization wants him in a position to succeed.
