Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets held a longer than usual practice before taking off for Pittsburgh which is where they will begin their two-game road trip but given they hadn’t played a game since January 27th it isn’t a surprise that the coaching staff wanted to ensure they got their legs going at hockey for all centre. We didn’t learn who was going on waivers but in order for Mark Scheifele to come off IR someone has to be assigned to the Moose so stay tuned for that news today. Morning skate gets underway at 10:30 AM CST. All the relevant news will be posted in the pre-game report so check back for that. Puck drop is at 6 PM CST.

Note II: This evening, after the final buzzer sounds between Winnipeg and Pittsburgh we want you to be part of the conversation on the Illegal Curve Post-Game Show as we discuss and analyze the results of the game.

Note III: A pair of Moose players in Brad Lambert (empty netter & one-timer highlights) and Kyle Capobianco played in the AHL All-Star game last night in San Jose. Today they join the rest of their teammates for some time off before they resume the post All-Star portion of the schedule on Friday night in Grand Rapids.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Jets thrilled with management’s belief in team. They saw it at the outset of the season when the team committed long-term to Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele. Moves like the Monahan deal solidify that belief and you have to think that the Jets aren’t done adding.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets head into Pittsburgh with their deepest roster of season. (Paywall). It was somewhat remarkable in yesterday’s media availability when Kelly Moore of 680 CJOB said to Kyle Connor that tonight’s game against the Penguins will be just the fourth time this season he’s had Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor and Gabriel Vilardi in it.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets invested in winning, say team’s all-stars after Monahan acquisition. (Paywall). While draft picks are important for the future, players questing for a Cup are focused on the present and the organization doing what they can to increase their odds to achieve that goal.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Jets mailbag: Trading for a defenceman? Rutger McGroarty’s NHL ETA? (Paywall). You folks had questions and Murat provides his insight and answers to those queries.

Global News: Jets, Canucks make big signings, but which team made the ‘better’ deal? While folks will love to speculate about winners/losers the reality is this can only really be properly judged once a season is concluded and you can see the outcomes for these clubs.

TSN: How do the Canadian teams at the top stack up in the back half of the NHL seasonTSN’s NHL analyst Marty Biron joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss some news around the NHL including the Jets acquiring Sean Monahan and if it’s enough for Winnipeg to win their division, or if they need to make another move; if Edmonton can set a new NHL win streak record and if Stuart Skinner is good enough to help the Oilers’ chase for a cup; what move could the Leafs make to become better; if the Canucks can carry their momentum and win the Presidents trophy; and how the rest of the field shakes out heading closer to the playoffs.
