Note: The Jets didn’t skate yesterday and won’t have a morning skate today in advance of their afternoon game against the Sharks. Because it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States it will be an early game today in San Jose with puck drop at 3 pm CT. Update: Coach Maurice is going with same lineup today against the Sharks as he used against the Kings, including Michael Hutchinson getting the start in net. For our Jets/Sharks Pre-game report click here.
Note II: The Moose will practice today before they head out on the road for six games (four in Texas and two in North Carolina). The team snapped their five game losing streak yesterday largely thanks to a 43 save performance by Ondrej Pavelec.
Jets news:
Sportsnet: Does Paul Maurice make his goalies worse than they actually are? You’d think that the headline would read somewhat differently based on the conclusion reached but an interesting read nonetheless.
FRS: Friedman delves into contract situations of Maurice and Treliving. Chris transcribed a chat the hockey insider had this morning on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 which included talk about the Jets coach and his contract. You can listen to that interview here.
Winnipeg Sun: Five keys to Jets-Sharks game. Ted’s list includes: 1) Keep it going. 2) Surging power play. 3) Good goaltending. 4) Lucky or good? 5) Shark attack. And Ted’s big matchup is Dustin Byfuglien vs. Brent Burns.
Winnipeg Sun: Defence and goaltending Achilles heels for Jets. When you look at the goals against the Jets commitment to team defence as a collective group makes this team look rather porous.
Winnipeg Free Press: Laine absence an unfillable hole. (Paywall). You cannot replace 21 goals by committee. The sooner the Jets get their prized rookie back in the fold the better it will be for this team.
Illegal Curve: Panel discusses Jets Troubles. During the intermission of Saturday’s Jets and Kings game the panel spoke about the Jets goalie situation as well as the job security of coach Maurice.
Moose news:
Illegal Curve: Moose end losing streak with 4-1 win over Wolves. Behind Pavelec’s numerous saves and some timely goals in the middle frame the Moose got an important win after losing five straight. Our recap includes a goal summary, player assessment, lineup and audio from Pavelec, Olsen and Coach Vincent.
Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec saves 43 shots, propels Moose to victory. No question that he was the difference in the game as he managed to hold off the high powered Chicago offence in the 1st period only surrendering a single goal while saving 20. Allowed his squad to come back in the middle frame.
Illegal Curve: A look at the Moose firefighter themed uniforms. I took a closer look at the uniforms that Manitoba wore in yesterday’s game.
