On the episode released today TSN insider Darren Dreger and former NHLer Ray Ferraro discuss topics from across the NHL including the latest on the Winnipeg Jets and what might be happening with Connor Hellebuyck and Pierre-Luc Dubois. The conversation began with the top netminder of the Jets in response to the report from last night by Pierre LeBrun that the Devils have interest in the Michigan product.
Dreger on Hellebuyck:
“On a team like the New Jersey Devils or any top contending team if it’s fair to call them that at this stage, there has got to be a balance. Right? I mean he wants to win but they can’t afford to pay him nine and a half million dollars, Vasilevskiy money, on an extension. So is the player willing to compromise or not? If you’re Tom Fitzgerald don’t you have to know that before you execute that trade even though he’s got one year left on his deal.”
Dreger on Dubois:
“Here’s something that doesn’t seem to be getting a whole lot of attention and it’s so obvious to me. You know restricted free agents now have more clout than ever before. Look at Alex Debrincat in Ottawa, certainly Pierre-Luc Dubois but wait a minute here. Winnipeg owns Dubois rights for another year. It’s like ‘He’s not going to play in the NHL next season?’ Like if they don’t get the market value for Pierre-Luc Dubois that they absolutely need does he not have to sign that one year deal and take your chances of getting moved at the trade deadline. Sitting out and not playing until December 1st can’t be an option that makes any sense to Pierre-Luc Dubois or his agent Pat Brisson.”
Hellebuyck talks starts at 6:25. Dubois talk at 9:44 and goes until 13:14.
