Video Description:
In this episode of 32 Thoughts, Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman talk about the Canes sending trade offers for Connor Hellebuyck.
Dave’s Notes:
Bukauskas began by saying his understanding is that Hurricanes left-shot defenceman Alexander Nikishin, who is an unsigned RFA, is no longer part of Carolina’s proposed trade package for Connor Hellebuyck. While he didn’t provide a reason, one possibility is that Nikishin wouldn’t agree to a long-term deal with Winnipeg. It’s also worth questioning why the Jets would be looking to add another left-shot defenceman given that isn’t an area of weakness for the organization.
Friedman said he was told on Wednesday that Carolina has made an offer to Winnipeg that doesn’t include Nikishin. However, he suggested that if the revised package were “so spectacular to the Jets,” the trade would already have been completed. It’s also worth recalling that Jets AGM Larry Simmons was spotted sitting beside us in the press box during the Moose’s season-opening weekend against the Chicago Wolves, presumably to get a closer look at some of the Hurricanes prospects in their system.
Friedman added that he believes Buffalo and Utah remain in the mix as potential trade destinations for Hellebuyck.
He also found it interesting that Carolina had changed its original offer before discussing how the Hurricanes’ front office typically approaches trades. Friedman noted that when Carolina decides it’s time to make a deal, “it’s time,” suggesting the organization tends to move decisively once it has settled on a course of action.
Friedman isn’t sure where talks stand with Carolina, while Buffalo and Utah may be hoping Winnipeg feels pressured to make a deal, although he questions whether that approach will work.
