It all came down to a Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg as Manitoba and Milwaukee did battle for a chance to advance and face juggernaut Grand Rapids in the 2nd Round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Lineup news:
No surprise but no lineup changes for the Moose.
Moose lineup:
Barlow-Ford-PDG
Lambert-Yager-Wahlin
Shaw-Gustafsson-Duehr
JAD-Zhilkin-Fagemo
Phillips-Salomonsson
Sautner-Bauer
Anhorn-Clague
DiVincentiis
Notable:
The prospects didn’t show any jitters in this winner-take all game as Brad Lambert went for a skate using his speed to create a few opportunities early in this game.
David Gustafsson has made his presence felt all series long. He got an early chance as he tips this shot but Murray makes the stop.
Put this in the strange category: Net was off the moorings BEFORE the puck was dropped but literally nobody on the ice noticed. Play was underway for a good 20 seconds before Moose goalie Domenic DiVincentiis recognized it and even a few few seconds more for the officials.
If not for Admirals goalie, Matthew Murray the Moose would already a multi goal lead. He’s made some unbelievable saves already in this hockey game including this one on Colby Barlow.
Moose with three glorious chances during this one minute segment which ends with Walker Duehr scoring the opening goal of the game.
Samuel Fagemo had an absolutely glorious chance to put the Moose up by a pair but he rings it off the post. Puck bounces a bit on him there but those are chances that need to be buried.
A very good period for the Moose who lead 1-0 after 20 minutes and have a 15-7 shot edge. Manitoba has also killed one and most of the second penalty they took in the opening period. Lots of Grade A chances but Admirals goalie Matthew Murray was excellent.
Jets goalie prospect Domenic DiVincentiis with ice water in his veins as he stops the shot in close to keep his team up by a goal.
As time wound down in the middle frame, Team Sweden connected on the insurance goal for the Moose as David Gustafsson led the forecheck, recovered the puck and fed Samuel Fagemo, who you felt was due for one with all his chances this series, to make it a 2-0 Moose lead.
Jets prospect Brad Lambert with the chance to put the dagger in this game for the Moose with his team up a pair late in the 3rd but he rang it off the post.
And the Moose will advance as they win Game 3 by a final score of 2-1. What a series between Manitoba and Milwaukee.
First series win for the Moose since 2017-18 as they win last two games to defeat the Admirals in the first round. Two teams which battled tooth and nail this series shake hands seconds after trying to pulverize each other.
Multi-point game:
David Gustafsson 2A
