Game 7: Penguins 7 Jets 2 post-game recap

Post-game from the Jets dressing room as well as from Coach Maurice.

Shockingly it was the only game of the seven that the Jets have played to date that saw them open the scoring when Mathieu Perreault banked in a shot for his second goal of the season.  But the Penguins tied it up about three minutes later and didn’t look back.  They did however look up at the Jumbotron quite a bit to watch the replay of their seven goals.  Although the 1st period would end tied at 1.

Just under eight minutes into the middle frame Jake Guentzel would score a power play goal followed by Sam Lafferty about 41 seconds later to make it 3-1.  Mark Scheifele would bring the Jets within one courtesy of his third of the campaign off a nice pass by Patrik Laine but that is as close as they would come on this night.  Dominik Simon restored the Pens two goal lead and that’s how the 2nd would conclude.

There was a lot of scoring by the visitors in the 3rd period as Lafferty would get his second of the game as would Guentzel around the mid point of the 3rd to break it open and the cherry on top would be a Zach Aston-Reese shorthanded goal which made it 7-2.

For those who would like to take a deeper dive into the advanced stats here are the results from the game via Natural Stat Trick.

Notable:

– Andrew Copp played in his 300th NHL game;
– Brandon Tanev got a tv timeout mention and applause from the crowd;
– Paul Maurice brought out the line blender in the 3rd;
– Sidney Crosby is still really good at hockey;
– Sam Lafferty is my favourite name in hockey for obvious reasons.

Video:

Coach Maurice:  Where did the game go wrong in his eyes?  Bad bounces/bad puck luck…is that an easy way to explain it away?  On the line blender.  Evaluating Laurent Brossoit’s game.  What is leaving the power play vulnerable to chances and goals against?  On Ville Heinola sitting a second straight game.  Rectifying goals from the goalmouth.  More on the power play.
