The Buffalo Sabres are expected to name Kevin Dineen as their American Hockey League head coach in Portland, giving the former 19-year NHL veteran the responsibility of developing a fresh group of prospects while allowing him to stay with the same team.

Dineen has coached Portland the last couple of years, but this season the team has switched its NHL affiliation from Anaheim to Buffalo. So, Dineen stays in the same city but gets new prospects and veterans to work with. The former Hartford Whaler is certainly a candidate to become a NHL head coach within the next season or two, so it will be interesting to watch how he fairs with some new players this season. The bet here is that he’ll do quite well.
