The other day the Minnesota Wild announced they had signed Peter Thome as Hockey Operations Analyst and Emergency Backup Goalie (EBUG). In the team release they indicated:
“Under the updated NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team must designate a permanent EBUG who travels with the club for all home and away games this season. To be eligible, the EBUG cannot have NHL experience or have played more than 80 professional games.”
In yesterday’s IC Morning Papers I speculated that Altona’s Cole Kehler, who played three games for the Moose in 2021, could get the call.
Turns out that speculation was correct.
The Altona Maroons announced on Instagram today that Kehler has been selected to serve as the EBUG for the Winnipeg Jets this season, which also means the Maroons will be looking for a new goalie coach. One goaltending question in Winnipeg has been answered, at least.

And for a Manitoba-born goalie with Moose experience, it feels like a pretty natural fit.
