Trade talk

The cost of Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd

What might be the expected return for the Jets captain?

One of the most talked about players as we approach the February 29th, 2016 trade deadline is Jets captain Andrew Ladd.  In his Sunday column Ottawa Sun columnist Bruce Garrioch essentially said that the league is waiting for the Jets to make a move since a Ladd deal will likely set the market for forwards.  But what might that market be?

Ladd pondering

Senior correspondent for TSN Gary Lawless put out a series of tweets this morning about the value of Andrew Ladd as well as what the price of the Jets captain, who has been on a hot streak of late, might look like:

– Just like that Andrew Ladd has 16 goals and is one off #nhljets lead. Let’s put an end to the ridiculous suggestion he’s finished.

– Very hard to gauge effect off-season surgery had on Ladd but it’s clear he’s finally moving like his old self and playing with confidence

– Ladd’s current play improves his value on rental market if #nhljets elect to move him. Also has to have Wpg brass re-evaluating their stance

– For #nhljets, if they elect to move Ladd, price has to be substantial. First and a prospect. Cheveldayoff won’t budge once he sets price

– Ladd will almost certainly hit 20 goals for fifth time in last six (18 in lockout). Picks and prospects are great but not guarantees. He is.

– Point is, if you are going to move Ladd, there has to be substantial return. Rental or not, this is a player of value.

– Final thought on Ladd. 5 x 6.25. Shaves off term and gets him closer to deal he wants. A little something for both sides #nhljets

To Gary’s last point this past July Richard Pollock of the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN 1290 Winnipeg and a contributor to illegalcurve.com wrote about What the fair market value (in terms of a contract) might look like for the Jets captain.  This isn’t out of the realm either since there have been reports that Ladd wants to remain a Winnipeg Jet.

Now we wait to see what Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff does, if anything, prior to the deadline on February 29th. (here is a breakdown of the 16 playoff teams and where he may or may not be going if traded).

Update:  Cheveldayoff doing a lot of listening on Ladd.   Gary put out this article on some of the team’s that may be calling the Jets GM.
