The Moose opened their six-game road trip on a tough note last Wednesday, suffering just their second loss of the season in Grand Rapids, with both defeats coming at the hands of the Griffins. Manitoba bounced back with a pair of wins in Iowa to improve to 7-2-0-0 and remain perfect against every other team in the Central Division. This morning, the Moose were in Rosemont, Illinois, just outside Chicago, to face the Wolves for the fourth time already this season.
The Moose welcomed Walker Duehr back to practice on Monday after the forward had been sidelined with a lower-body injury dating back to training camp with the Jets. On the injury front, we also learned following Saturday’s game in Iowa that veteran defencemen Ashton Sautner and Dysin Mayo are both out with injuries.
Lineup news:
While Duehr practiced yesterday he wasn’t back in the lineup today. Only lineup changes were Jacob Julien came in for Fabian Wager while Thomas Milic got the call in net.
Moose lineup:
Wahlin – Yager – Chibrikov
Gregor – Zhilkin – Ford
He – Julien – Barlow
Empey – Yoder – Burnside
Thrun – Barteaux
Phillips – Freij
Nause – Gustafsson
Milic
Notable:
With the visitors down by two goals it was a nice time for Evan Nause to score his first ever AHL goal to bring the Moose within one.
Back down by two in the middle frame, Manitoba again got back within one (you’ll notice that theme in this game) as Lucas Wahlin got in on the forecheck which led to a turnover and then he neatly deflected the Isaak Phillips point shot to bring the Moose within one. He’s been such a good find and now has 4G 4A in ten games.
Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin continues to show off his growth after an excellent summer. He got his 5th goal of the season in game 10. Last year he had 12 in 62. Great stretch pass by Alfons Freij and touch by Noah Gregor. Third time in the game the Moose get within one.
The Moose power play, which came into this game Top 3 in the AHL, wasn’t been able to convert on any of their opportunities in this hockey game. Even worse they had a chance to tie the game in the 3rd but gave up a shorthanded tally. Wolves took their fourth two-goal lead of the game.
The Moose were unable to generate much of anything offensively in the final frame, failing to register a shot on goal. Trailing by two with under four minutes remaining, they pulled Thomas Milic for an extra attacker to create a 6-on-4 advantage following an offensive-zone faceoff. However, Chicago added an empty-net goal to make it 6-3 and put the game out of reach.
Special teams failed them today with Chicago going 3/6 and Manitoba 0/4 while giving up a shorthanded goal.
With the loss the Moose fall to 7-3-0 on the season.
