Game 2: Winnipeg Jets vs Detroit Red Wings pre-game report

A look at the projected lineups and latest updates ahead of puck drop.

The Jets begin their first road trip of the season in Michigan today, looking for their first win after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins in Friday’s season opener. They’ll face a Red Wings team also looking to get into the win column after being shut out 2-0 by the Rangers that same night.

Both clubs are navigating off-ice headaches involving unhappy cornerstone players in Connor Hellebuyck and Dylan Larkin, with Detroit also dealing with talented unsigned defenceman Simon Edvinsson, who reportedly prefers a trade rather than playing for the team that drafted him sixth overall back in 2021. The focus this afternoon, however, shifts to securing two points.

Skate news:

No morning skate today. Worth noting that Gabriel Vilardi did not practice on Saturday, with head coach Scott Arniel indicating it was a maintenance day. We’ll have to wait until warm-up to see if there are any changes for either club.

Warm-up skate:

As per Mitchell Clinton of the Jets, it will be Stuart Skinner in net this afternoon for Winnipeg. He also indicated that Gabriel Vilardi is on the ice as is Cole Koepke which means they are being cautious in case someone isn’t able to go at puck drop. But ultimately once line rushes began according to Mitchell no changes for Winnipeg.

Jets projected lines & D pairs:

Odds:

Winnipeg heads into Detroit with the Red Wings favoured in this matchup, although both clubs are still searching for their first win. A strong start, disciplined puck management and making Detroit’s depleted forward group work for its chances could help the Jets set the tone in their first road game of the season.
