Darren Dreger: Jonathan Toews appears headed for retirement

Nothing official but the NHL insider reported this today.

Not a shocking report this morning from TSN’s Darren Dreger, who indicated on X that “Nothing official, but at this point it seems likely Jonathan Toews is retiring”. If you were at the Jets’ final day of exit meetings, it did seem likely that the Winnipegger was calling it a career as he hugged teammates goodbye and signed sticks for them, although he said at the time that he would need some time to reflect on his decision.

Toews returned to the NHL this past season after a health battle that kept him away from the game for over two years.

He signed with his hometown Winnipeg Jets last June amid much fanfare and went on to play all 82 games during the 2025-26 season, a remarkable accomplishment given his lengthy absence from the league and the condensed schedule.

He finished the campaign with 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points.

It’s been a Hall of Fame career for the Manitoban, who captured three Stanley Cups in six years, won two Olympic gold medals, a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and much more over a career that spanned 17 NHL seasons.

Much more to come when/if the news becomes official.
