For the past three seasons the Moose were led by Jimmy Oligny who wore the ‘C’ on his chest while leading this team on and off the ice since December of 2021. He won the 2023 Yanick Dupré Memorial Award as AHL Man of the Year but dealt with serious injuries that hampered his ability to be on the ice with his teammates for the last couple of seasons. He signed overseas this summer leaving the captaincy vacant.
The Moose have already played 13 games this season so it was possible they would go without a captain like they did during the covid year of 2020-2021 when they instead had four alternates.
On Tuesday the team teased that they would be naming a new captain and today we now know that is Dominic Toninato, who has been named the 11th captain in the 25 year history of the Moose although this is technically the 12th captain in franchise history as Jason Jaffray wore the ‘C’ during the four seasons they were in St. John’s.
Toninato is a good choice for captain as he is well respected by his teammates. The Minnesotan has been part of the Jets organization since the 2020-21 season. In addition the team named Ashton Sautner and Mason Shaw as alternates.
