(1) Game Summary
After a successful road trip which saw the Moose (8-5-1-1), win 4 of 6 games, the team returned home to take on a division rival, the Chicago Wolves (4-7-1-0). While most AHL teams represent just one NHL club, the Wolves are unique, they take in players from both the Vegas Golden Knights, and the St. Louis Blues.
First Period
Just 1:16 into the game, a defensive breakdown (which began in the neutral zone with Julian Melchiori) led to a 2-on-1 against; Sami Niku was unable to stop the pass across, and Stefan Matteau ended up in the danger zone, all alone and beat Michael Hutchinson with a slick backhand deke. With just 3:14 left in the first, J.C Lipon entered the zone on a seemingly harmless play, but with Peter Stoykewych crashing the net, the shot caromed off of him and found its way in.
Second Period
2:40 into the period, Brendan Lemieux came down the left wing and ripped a wrist shot, bar-down from the faceoff dot. Michael Hutchinson made several great saves, including a huge right-pad save partway through to keep the Moose up by 1. But with 4:37 left in the second, Stefan Matteau scored his second goal of the game on a one-timer from the top of the circle which squeeked right through Hutchinson.
Third Period
3:22 in, Cam Schilling took a wrister from the point and Mason Appleton deflected it in from the slot to give the Moose a 3-2 lead. The Moose relied on Hutchinson from there on in, as he stood on his head, stopping all 16 Wolves shots in the third.
