First signing of the day for Winnipeg.

There has been plenty of speculation as to who may be sharing the Jets net for the upcoming 2017-18 season and that was answered soon after Free Agency was officially opened when Winnipeg announced that they had signed former Flyers goalie Steve Mason.  In 463 NHL games in nine seasons with the Blue Jackets and Flyers he has a 200-177-63 record which includes a career 2.68 GAA and .911 save %.

Once free agency officially opened the terms for Mason were released and they are two years at 4.1 million per season.

Steve Mason was just on TSN talking about what he can bring to the Jets team:

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to Canada after being in the States to start my career, coming back to a Canadian city that obviously lost their franchise for a number of years and was able to get a team back.  Just the passionate fan base that they have has made it real attractive.”

“I had a really good conversation with Chevy, Paul Maurice and Wade Flaherty, the goalie coach, there in Winnipeg and basically we were very open about what we expected from each other and I think it is going to be a really good fit for myself moving forward here.”

“…one of the best things about hockey is playing in front of sold out buildings.  So going to Winnipeg where you can count on a sold out building every single night, having a passionate fan base that is going to back the team, you look at the roster and its a great team already and I just hope I can be another piece of the puzzle”

“if you handle it properly the pressure can be a fun thing too.  I have no doubt in my mind that I can come in and help the Jets win some hockey games this year and get us into the playoffs and like I said, looking at the roster I believe this team has some great things in the future here.”

Jets have now made it official.
