Winnipeg Jets Nikolaj Ehlers out indefinitely with eye injury

Ehlers out indefinitely

It sounded brutal all the way up in the Press box when Nikolaj Ehlers took a puck to the visor last night in OT.

While he was attended to quickly by the trainers and skated off it didn’t sound or look very good for the Jets rookie.  We didn’t get an update following the game but expected one to happen today after the skate at MTS Centre.

Head coach Paul Maurice announced that Ehlers will be “out indefinitely” due to the injury he sustained.  According to the Jets bench boss the visor broke and Ehlers had blood in the eye chamber.  The team doesn’t yet know the extent but will have a better idea after 24 hours when he see specialists and is tested.

Coach Maurice added that he hopes to have a better idea of a timeline on Ehlers by tomorrow.  He will be shut down until it has dissipated.  He did say that there is “no expectation of anything long term”.

Update:  Coach Maurice spoke today following practice and said that it was “good news.  His tests yesterday the bleeding stopped so we would comfortably say that we are not expecting any long term problems with this injury.  Going forward he is going to see the specialist again in a week and from now until that time he is not going to do anything.  In a week’s time we will get a feel for where the blood level is in his eye and then go from there.  He is still out indefinitely.  It hasn’t gotten worse.  It’s not worse than we thought yesterday.  We really don’t know how long it is going to take.  The next step is a week from now.”
