Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets wrapped up their quick two-game homestand with their third straight victory as they defeated the Flames by a final score of 5-2. The team finally gave backup goalie Eric Comrie enough run support after the highest scoring team in the NHL only got 12 goals in his last eight contests. Today they are scheduled to hold an optional practice before they head out on the road for three games. We learned that the team is bringing captain Adam Lowry on the road but only as a “friendly face” which means, given the team only has 12 healthy forwards, who might they recall from the Moose? Likely they go back with prospect Brad Lambert but don’t be shocked if they bring Parker Ford who has seven goals in his last nine games. Check back for the Practice Report to get all the latest news.

Note II: The Moose were off on Sunday following a disappointing homestand which saw them go 0-4-0 being swept in two, two-game sets by the Marlies and then the Griffins. Worth noting that last year Manitoba was sitting in last place in the AHL on January 27th when they picked up a win and turned their season around. That team was 12-23-1 and this year’s squad is 11-23-1. Now I’m not saying that this team will be able to accomplish what they did last year but never say never. Today they are scheduled to practice at hockey for all centre at 10:30 AM CST.

Note III: While Sunday night wasn’t as productive for Jets 2023 1st rounder Colby Barlow as his Saturday (four goals) he did get the lone goal for Oshawa last night which gives him 27 on the season which ties him with Kieron Walton (2024 6th) for most goals by a prospect. Across the country prospect Brayden Yager (2023 1st) showed off his smooth shot as he found the back of the net to help Lethbridge get back to their winning ways. He almost had another goal after he anticipated this pass and made a nice interception to give him a partial breakaway chance.

Winnipeg Free Press: Comrie clutch in second win since November. (Paywall). It’s been a slog for the affable netminder, although his team scoring a paltry 12 goals in eight games hasn’t helped, but his importance to this team goes beyond wins and losses.

Winnipeg Free Press: Vilardi firing on all cylinders on top line. (Paywall). The top line was firing last night and he was impactful throughout the course of that hockey game and number 13 was a big part of that success. Ken has more from inside CLC.
