Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets hit the ice for a practice on Wednesday for an optional where we learned that the news about Josh Morrissey was better than expected. We shall be eagerly watching to see if 44 makes an appearance at the practice today which gets underway at 11 AM CST. Check back for the Practice Report.

Note II: Earlier in the day we learned that Jets prospect Elias Salomonsson had been named to the AHL All-Star game. The Moose were looking to keep the good times going after taking of three of four points from the Wranglers in Calgary to start the road trip. They were going to have to do it without Brad Lambert who was dealing with an illness. After a 0-0 first period the Moose got things going early in the 2nd when Ben King opened the scoring. After falling behind 2-1 in the middle frame the power play struck late in the period to tie the game off a nice tip by Mason Shaw. Early in the 3rd Parker Ford goes one on three but still found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game for the Moose. After the Admirals tied the game extra time would be needed where the Moose won it in OT as Parker Ford got his second of the game with less than ONE second on the clock. Manitoba is 2-0-1 in the first three games of this road trip. Today is a travel day as they head to Grand Rapids.

Note III: Just another three point night (1G 2A) for Jets prospect Kieron Walton (2024 6th) who is now tied for 2nd overall in the OHL points race. Took 8 shots in game He’s got 24G 42A for 66 points in 37 games.

Winnipeg Sun: A celly for Helle: Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck better than ever. As we said the other night on the show there is a certain element of folks that tend to take what they are witnessing for granted but as I wrote on twitter the other day, it’s something we’ve never ever seen from a Jets goalie for this long a stretch.

Winnipeg Free Press: Injury not expected to cause Morrissey to miss significant time. (Paywall). Quite the change from last season when the backend was so stable.

Winnipeg Free Press: Construction company owner fills in as Jets practice goalie. (Paywall). Fun little story done by Mike on one of the first draft picks this organization ever selected during the NHL Draft in St. Paul back in 2011.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Winnipeg Jets midseason report cards: Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele top forward class. (Paywall). Murat put on his grading hat in order to hand out some midseason grades to the team.

Jets video:

TSN: Jets’ defensive situation is fluid after Morrissey injury and Samberg nearing a return. John Lu has the latest on the lower-body injury to Jets’ defenceman Josh Morrissey and why a lot hinges on whether he can practice on Thursday. Head coach Scott Arniel didn’t rule out Morrissey for Friday’s game against the Kings.

Sportsnet: Which team is the best in the Western Conference? In this edition of Take Your Pick the Wednesday Night Hockey panel discusses which team is the best in the West, the leading contenders for the Calder Trophy, and the goaltender who has been the season’s biggest surprise.
