Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: Things looked like they were going to finally go the Jets way against their Golden Knights arch-rivals as they held a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd courtesy of Nikita Chibrikov’s third goal in three NHL games (one of which was game 82 last season) although the deserve to win-O-meter was definitely favouring Vegas. But the game slipped away in the 3rd from Winnipeg after two very late penalties allowed Vegas to tie it and then win it 3-2 in OT due to a bad line change/bad pass. It was the first extra time loss suffered by the Jets this season. They are scheduled to practice today at 12 noon at Canada Life Centre so check back for the Practice Report.

Note II: The Moose went from Alberta to BC on Thursday as they get set to conclude their four-game road trip with a pair of games this weekend in Abbotsford. Today they are set to practice at the Abbotsford Centre at 3 PM CST.

Note III: Yesterday we did get health updates from head coach Scott Arniel on Nikolaj EhlersDylan Samberg & David Gustafsson.

Note IV: We also learned on Thursday that the Jets placed Henri Nikkanen on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination. The 2019 4th rounder hadn’t been getting much playing time this season (played 13 of 21 games) and had just one goal and three assists to show for it. He’ll likely head back overseas to pursue the next stage of his hockey career.

Note V: In my prospects rundown I missed the four point game of Jets 2024 6th rounder Kierson Walton on Wednesday night which at the time put him into a tie for 4th in OHL points. Last night in the OHL a pair of prospects were in action. 2024 4th rounder Kevin He had a goal for Niagara in their win while 2023 1st rounder Colby Barlow also finished with a goal in a OT loss for Oshawa.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Jets blow late lead, bitten by Vegas again, this time in OT. While I understand Jets fans anger at the DeMelo “penalty” the fact is Vegas was the better team throughout the hockey game and deserved to win that game. Of course the most deserving team doesn’t always win. Check out Paul’s game recap.

Winnipeg Free Press: Late penalties, bad line change cost Jets in OT loss to Golden Knights. (Paywall). Ken gives you his birds eye view of the game that saw Winnipeg squander a point in a game they probably deserved one at most.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets get creative in effort to attract corporate support. (Paywall). While folks love to malign Winnipeg’s support of the Jets the fact is the fanbase supports their team at a percentage that isn’t done by most (if not all) other markets because the corporate support is so much less here. Mike wrote about ways in which the team is trying to change that.

Las Vegas Review-Journal: Knights rally past Jets in OT to win 4th straight. Get insight into the game from a writer that covers the Jets opponent.

Global News: Jets blow late lead, lose 3-2 in OT to Vegas.  Russ and Christian combined for this game recap.

The Athletic Winnipeg: The Jets’ biggest strengths and weaknesses after 30 games and the stats behind them. (Paywall). With the Jets hitting the 30 game mark it has given Murat plenty to digest and he examines the highs and lows of this season. (Note this was obviously released before yesterday’s game but is a good read so worth checking out).

TSN: Are the Jets still the team to beat in the West? After a tough loss to the Vegas Golden Knights where they squandered the lead late in the third, TSN Hockey analyst Martin Biron joins SportsCentre to discuss if the Jets are still the team to beat in the West.
