Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Day 15 interviews: In case you missed anything from Thursday we heard from head coach Scott Arniel (listen here).

Note: It was an incredibly busy day in Jetsland yesterday as the team made their third cut of training camp reducing the roster by seven players. Four of those players were sent down via waivers so we will see if they clear and can thereafter be assigned to the AHL club. With two D men injured for the foreseeable future the Jets added two forwards to the day-to-day list as David Gustafsson and Jaret Anderson-Dolan are both dealing with something minor according to Scott Arniel. For a full recap of all that was happening on day 15 check out the recap here.

Note II: It was a newsy day for a pair of Jets prospects in 2023 1st Brayden Yager and 2023 1st rounder Colby Barlow. The Saskatoon product in Yager was returned to his junior club in Moose Jaw last Sunday and yesterday he was named 36th captain of the team while Ontario product Barlow was also returned to his junior club in Owen Sound at the same time but he chose not to report, instead requesting a trade from the OHL team he’s spent the last three seasons with. He got his wish yesterday as it was announced he had been acquired by the Oshawa Generals.

Note III:  The Jet are slated to be on the ice at 10 AM at hockey for all centre as they prepare for their final exhibition game of the pre-season. Will be interesting to see the roster as it will be a chance to make an impression on Scott Arniel and his coaching staff as they look to get their final roster down from 27 (29 with Heinola/Stanley who will start season on IR) down to 23/22 by Sunday. Puck drop is 8 PM as they take on the Flames in Calgary with the game being streamed on the team website.

Note IV: The Moose played their first exhibition game last night as they took on the University of Manitoba Bisons. Unfortunately I was unable to attend and there was nary a tweet about the game. Did it happen? I’m sure it did but unfortunately I have no info to relay to you about it. Manitoba are off today but will be back on the ice tomorrow.

Jets news:

Global News: ‘Points in division’ crucial for Jets facing competition this season. Winnipeg definitely cleaned up inside the division last season and John’s right that this will be critical again to ensure a playoff spot.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets’ power-play makeover already producing desired results. In addition to the many questions about the Jets roster the biggest offseason speculation surrounded the special teams. So far the power play looks to be adding an element of production they didn’t last season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Scrappy Swede turning heads on Jets’ blue line. (Paywall). Lots to like from what we’ve seen from Elias Salomonsson so far this training camp but has he done enough to avoid seasoning in the AHL?

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets trim training camp roster. (Paywall). The next moves made by the team will be the one to watch as they get their roster compliant by the 4 PM CT deadline of Sunday.

Illegal Curve Hockey: Gabriel Vilardi could be a difference maker. Big question mark for Connor Hrabchak is health but if the winger can play a large chunk of games for Winnipeg he feels that number 13 had a chance to make a big impact.

TSN: How can Jets translate regular season success to playoffs? Last season, the Jets finished with 110 points, but their playoff run fell short in the first round. How can Winnipeg translate their regular season success into the post season? TSN’s Hockey analysts Mike Johnson and Craig Button have more.
