Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Keeping you up-to-date with all the latest pro hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets got off to a slow start in Pittsburgh last night and then a match penalty to Brenden Dillon turned the game fully into the Penguins favour as they added two power play goals on their way to a 3-0 victory over Winnipeg. Stay tuned to see if there will be any supplemental discipline for number 5. It was the third time in the last seven games the Jets have been shut out. Despite having their full lineup they didn’t get the result they were aiming for. They’ve got a day of practice scheduled for today in New Jersey as they prepare for the concluding game of this road trip tomorrow night in Philadelphia. Stay tuned for the Practice Report.

Note II: In order to be roster compliant when they took Mark Scheifele off IR it necessitated the Jets putting someone on waivers which they did on Tuesday afternoon by placing Axel Jonsson-Fjällby on it. We will know at 1 PM CST if he was claimed or if he can be assigned to the Moose. (Update: He cleared).

Note III: Today is the final day off for AHL All-Star break for the Moose before they get back in business and resume their push for a playoff spot. It will begin with a practice tomorrow in Grand Rapids as they kick off four games away from Manitoba starting with the Griffins on Friday night.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Scrambly Jets facing toughest test yet. While this does delve into the game Scott offers a lot of points to consider at the end of the article.

Winnipeg Sun: Dillon ejected, Jets blanked again as losing streak reaches season-high four games. For a third straight game the Jets were down to five defenceman as the match penalty to bruising Dman Brenden Dillon had him heading to the showers much earlier than his teammates. With the pair of goals the home team scored it was curtains for the visitors. Scott recaps the game.

Winnipeg Free Press: Match penalty the turning point as Pens blank slumping Jets. (Paywall). There is no question this was the difference in the hockey game although not being able to generate anything resembling a scoring chance on either of the power plays they had was also less than ideal.

Winnipeg Free Press: Harkins finding his place with Pens. (Paywall). It was the first time the Jets faced their former prospect Jansen Harkins who was claimed by Pittsburgh on waivers earlier this season. He played 154 games in a Winnipeg uniform as well as 200 in a Manitoba jersey and based on the photos the social media team shared he still has many connections to the players in the organization.

Global News: Offensive woes continue for Winnipeg Jets in 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh. Christian and Russ combine for this breakdown of the game.

Pittsburgh Tribune: Penguins’ retooled power play leads to win against Jets after Noel Acciari’s injury. Always good to get some insight into the game from a writer that covers the Jets opponent.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins’ power play seals win vs. Winnipeg Jets. Same sentiment as above.

Daily Faceoff: How Sean Monahan in the bumper can vastly improve the Winnipeg Jets power playAn interesting discussion with former QMJHL coach Jon Goyens who is currently with TSN 690 in Montreal about the impact Sean Monahan had on the Habs power play when he was put into the bumper position and how he can have a positive impact for the Jets when similarly positioned with their currently 24th overall ranked power play.

The Raw Knuckles Podcast: Interview with Sean Monahan before the trade to the Winnipeg JetsFormer NHLers Chris Nilan and Tim Stapleton (former Jet) had a chance to have this chat with Sean Monahan before he was dealt to Winnipeg.
