Note: As September rolls around and all this week we wanted to bring to your attention the Pass it Forward program which provides help to youth in Winnipeg who wish to play hockey but require aid in getting the necessary equipment. The program is in it’s 4th year, they have a brand new website, an active twitter feed @PassItForwardca, and they are giving away a team-signed picture of last season’s opening faceoff. Be sure to check it out.
Note II: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 today as we return to our Fall/Winter noon to 3 pm CST schedule. We have an action packed 3 hour show with a 4-man booth, which will include @ICdrew, @ICezzyg, @mremis and yours truly @ICdave. Guests include: Bill Lindsay (Florida Panthers TV Analyst), Kalen Qually (Pass it Forward), Ed Willes (Vancouver Province).
Jets news:
In Goal Magazine: Montoya’s new Jets mask. That is a pretty slick looking mask for the new Jets goalie. What are your thoughts?
The Telegram: How an NHL lockout would affect the IceCaps. Quite a few names on the IceCaps could have been wearing Jets jerseys. If there is a long lockout, which player would benefit most from playing in the AHL?
CBA news:
NorthJersey.com: Respect can get NHL out of neutral zone. The only side given zero respect in this battle are the fans unfortunately. They are being taken for granted by both sides.
MassLive.com: Boston Bruins cancel rookie camp and tournament. Considering that rookies were scheduled to start in a week, not a surprise the B’s cancelled, based on the state of negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA.
Edmonton Journal: Owners of Oilers, Flames may hit legal snag if NHL locks out its players. Gotta love legal challenges. While the NHLPA is free to use the law to its advantage, perhaps they would best be served spending more time negotiating in the boardroom instead of at Court.
NHL news:
Vancouver Sun: Espo’s historic rant inspired by Vancouver boo-birds. We will be talking a lot about the best Canadian team to ever represent our country. Many fondly recall 72′ but my personal favourite was the 87′ Canada Cup.
Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes, Shane Doan have a deal in principle worked out. You cannot be surprised that the Coyotes captain wants to remain loyal to the only NHL team he has ever played for, however it will be interesting to see how that team rewards him for that loyalty. As was reported he did have an offer from a mysterious Eastern Conference team (reportedly the Buffalo Sabres) for 4 years, 28 million so it will be interesting to see if this new deal is anywhere close. A report out of the Vancouver Province has the contract at 4 years, 21.5 million.
Bostn Globe: Brad Marchand signs four-year, $18 million extension. I was discussing this yesterday and had to check capgeek to see if his contract was actually 4.5 million per after next season. While his grit is well regarded, apparently 55 points (70th in the NHL last season overall) sure counts for a lot in today’s NHL.
CFL Report:
Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news. Plenty of news ahead of Sunday’s Banjo Bowl contest.
