Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets had themselves a busy day and then things for the local NHL club took a turn. It began with the news that they had assigned prospect Elias Salomonsson (2022 2nd) from the Moose to his Swedish club of Skelleftea. At the same time they also assigned prospect Henri Nikkanen (2019 4th) from the Jets to the Moose bringing the training camp roster down to 28 players. We also learned that Jeffrey Viel had cleared waivers and could be assigned to Manitoba. While the Jets wrapped up the pre-season with a 3-0 exhibition loss to the Senators the biggest thing they lost was Ville Heinola, who appeared to have sown up a spot with the big club, to a leg injury that he suffered in the 1st period. After the game Winnipeg bench boss Rick Bowness labelled it as “It’s not good. It’s not going to be a short term injury.”.  We’ve got the full recap from the day that was here.

Note II: While the Ville news will most certainly cast a pall over the camp it will continue today with a 12:30 PM skate at the hockey for all centre. We will have complete coverage today so be sure to stay tuned to this site and our YouTube channel.

Note III: The Moose defeated the Bisons yesterday at Wayne Fleming Arena by a final score of 5-1 as the AHL club played an exhibition game against the University team. Manitoba are off today and will resume training camp tomorrow.

Note IV: Reminder to join us tomorrow for two hours of Jets and Moose talk on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show as Jets training camp is winding down with the team gets closer and closer to their opening day roster and on the other hand the Moose are just ramping up their camp. We discuss it all with Kelly Moore of 680 CJOB and Daniel Fink, play-by-play voice of the Manitoba Moose. Join us here.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Teammates left gutted after Heinola injury. They could all see how hard he’s worked to earn this shot which makes losing it all the more difficult for them to swallow.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets blanked by Senators in final pre-season tuneup, lose Heinola, too. The game is fairly meaningless in the grand scheme of things but the last part of that headline is significant.

Winnipeg Sun: ‘You never know’: The story of Ville Heinola’s training camp. Sadly for the talented defenceman ‘we do know’ although that is only through the power of hindsight since this article by Scott was written BEFORE he suffered that brutal injury in the first period of last night’s game.

Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators solid in preseason win over Jets. If you’d like to read about the game from the perspective of a writer that covers the Jets opponent then check this out.

Winnipeg Free Press: Sens blank Jets in preseason finale. (Paywall). Can we call it the revenge of Anton Forsberg game although, perhaps since the former Jets waiver claim back in 2021 never played a game for Winnipeg, revenge may be too strong a word. Regardless, he backstopped his club to a win over his “former” club. Mike has more in his game story.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets look for momentum from revamped power play. (Paywall). The penalty kill continues to chug along but the power play is going to be needed as well and it didn’t look particularly smooth last night.

Jets prospect news:

The Miami Student: Jets prospect Logan Neaton isn’t done with the RedHawks. Another Jets goalie prospect who will working hard this season as he plays his fifth and final year of college hockey.

Winnipeg Sports Talk: Jets training camp key takeaways. Andrew “Hustler” Paterson is joined by Murat Ates of The Athletic on Winnipeg Sports Talk Daily. They discuss the top storylines and key takeaways of Winnipeg Jets training camp as we head into the final preseason game.
