Note: The Jets began the day on Wednesday with the news that they had placed Jeffrey Viel on waivers which cut their training camp number down to 29. We will know at 1 PM CDT if he is claimed or if he gets assigned to the Moose. We’ve got the full recap from the day that was here.

Note II: It is a Jets gameday as they will play their sixth and final exhibition game as they take on the Senators here in Winnipeg. They will hit the ice in Winnipeg for morning skate at 10 AM with puck drop at 7 PM CDT. We will have complete coverage today so be sure to stay tuned to this site and our YouTube channel.

Note III: The Moose are also in action today as they will play a exhibition game at the University of Manitoba against the Bisons. The non-playing group skates at 9:15 AM while the playing group hits the ice at 10:30 AM. Puck drop at Wayne Fleming Arena is at 7 PM.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Jets coach Rick Bowness gets, perhaps gives, glimpse of opening-day lineup. It sure seems set in stone with the only real mystery for me being what the team decides to do about the 8th defenceman. I think at this point the top 12 is set with David Gustafsson established as the 13th. For me the question is do they waive Chisholm or Stanley?

Winnipeg Free Press: Gustafsson’s new, improved outlook paying off. (Paywall). He continued his strong defensive play in the opening moments of the game against the Flames showing his penalty killing ability off as he helped Winnipeg kill off two minors they took early in that game. When you add in his finding his scoring touch during this pre-season it sure seems like the talented Swede has locked up his spot on this Jets roster.

Winnipeg Free Press: Confident in the crease. (Paywall). The duo Connor Hellebuyck and Laurent Brossoit has a level of comfort for folks who can recall what the duo was able to do previously when they were teammates.

The Athletic Winnipeg: The 10 biggest Winnipeg Jets questions left to answer in preseason. (Paywall). Murat answers these questions including: 1) Cole Perfetti’s growing pains. 2) Ehlers injury/team’s illnesses affect takeoff? 3) So many questions about the D. including: 4) Elias Salomonsson’s status. 5) Josh Morrissey encore. 6) How good is the “real” Neal Pionk? 7) Can Dylan Samberg step into a top-four role. 8) Can Schmidt get his first step back now that he’s hurt. 9) Can Stanley take an everyday job back and if not, will he be traded? 10) Who stays and who goes on waivers?

Global News: It’s finally Ville Heinola’s time to shine with Jets. Hard to argue with Paul’s assessment. The talented Finn went home to Finland to put in the work and he (and the team) are reaping the rewards of that hard work and effort as he has the best training camp since he became a pro with Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Sports Talk: Will Ville Heinola start the season with the Winnipeg Jets. Andrew “Hustler” Paterson is joined by Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun. They discuss Ville Heinola’s breakout preseason, if he has earned a roster spot on the Winnipeg Jets and what that means for the rest of the defense.
