Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: The Jets split their training camp into two groups on Thursday although there was a third group made up of IR skaters. We did get the lay of the land when it comes to the players dealing with illness/malady. Unfortunately for 2023 1st rounder Colby Barlow the illness he was dealing with will cost him his shot at getting a pre-season game under his belt. We’ve got the full recap from the day that was here.

Note II: Today the Jets will see non-playing group skating at 10 AM and with the playing group flying off to Ottawa. We will have complete coverage today so be sure to stay tuned to this site and our YouTube channel.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Cole Perfetti isn’t going to be elite at faceoffs right away, and that’s OK. One thing we’ve been able to observe is his eagerness to learn. After formal skates concluded going up against the bigger and stronger Adam Lowry in order to work on that element of his game.

Winnipeg Sun: Nikolaj Ehlers tired of asking himself, ‘Why me?’. To hear him say “I just want to play 82 games” somewhat wistfully yesterday shows how much it weighs on him the inability to play a full season and show what he is capable of bringing each and every game.

Winnipeg Free Press: Ehlers eager to put injury-plagued season in the rear-view mirror. (Paywall). He did have back-to-back 82 game seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18. You could hear it in his voice speaking to how much work he put in during the summer only to be dealing with something like this although as he spun it, at least it is the preseason.

Winnipeg Free Press: Ford turning heads with all-out approach to game. (Paywall). I don’t want to put this label on him just because he went to the same college as a former Jet but he does give off Brandon Tanev vibes.

Winnipeg Free Press: Connor always hungry for more. (Paywall). When you have a shot like he does and an ability to find the back of the net, you just know that hitting 50 goals in a season is around the corner for the skilled winger from Michigan.

The Athletic: Jets’ big question: Is Winnipeg going to waste another year of Connor Hellebuyck’s excellence? (Paywall). The headline tells you what the author thinks of the Jets holding onto number 37.

The Athletic: Jets 2023-24 season preview: Playoff chances, projected points, roster rankings. (Paywall). They see playoffs but not much else for this Jets club.

Ottawa Sun: Josh Norris closing in on return with Ottawa Senators, but won’t face Jets. If you want some insight into the Jets opponent this evening.

TSN: Was Bowness right about the hit on PerfettiJets forward Cole Perfetti exited Winnipeg’s preseason shootout loss to Calgary on Wednesday after sustaining a hit to the head from Flames forward Martin Pospisil. After the game Rick Bowness called the hit a cheap shot. TSN Hockey analyst Frank Corrado shares his thoughts on Bowness’ assessment of the play.
