Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest hockey news in Manitoba.

Note: On day 2 of Jets training camp we heard from Mark Scheifele (watch here), Connor Hellebuyck (watch here), Cole Perfetti (watch here) and Jets head coach Rick Bowness (watch here). We learned that 2023 1st rounder Colby Barlow had signed his three-year ELC and that Nikolaj Ehlers had neck spasms which forced him to leave skate early and will cause him to miss skate today. We’ve got the full recap here.

Note II: Training camp for the Jets gets started with Team Selanne at 10 AM with Team Numminen on the ice at 1 PM. Here are the Jets training camp groups including the full rosters and schedule. We will have complete coverage today so be sure to stay tuned to this site and our YouTube channel.

Note III: Reminder that tomorrow is Fan Fest at Hockey For All Centre and in addition to watching Jets training camp you can come meet us as we will be doing the Illegal Curve Hockey Show from 9 AM until 11 AM inside the complex.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Jets’ Cole Perfetti comfortable, prepared for centre audition. For folks who question his ability he was able to adjust as a teenager playing in the AHL against bigger, stronger men. It took him some time but the kid is quite adept at figuring things out and eventually got to the tough areas in order to produce.

Winnipeg Sun: Hellebuyck, Scheifele, here for a good time, if not much longer. It is going to be fascinating to watch how this all plays out because even though I cover this team every single day I think if anyone tells you they know what is going to happen they aren’t being very forthright with you.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets Notebook. Scott wrote about: 1) Impact of Wheeler on Scheifele. 2) Barlow signing his ELC. 3) Ehlers providing an early scare.

Winnipeg Free Press: Scheifele says he’s open to staying in Winnipeg. (Paywall). With the current landscape around the NHL and after a summer without a tremendous amount seemingly taking place it would appear that these two entities will continue to be in business together.

Winnipeg Free Press: Oft-injured Perfetti feeling good and ready for the future. (Paywall). To hear Mark Scheifele speak about the work the 2020 1st rounder put in this summer and to hear Perfetti himself analyze how he can decease situations that lead to injury, he sure sounds ready to achieve his first full season as a pro.

Winnipeg Free Press: No.1 goalie enthusiastic about Jets’ chances, vague about future beyond this season. (Paywall). One thing about Connor Hellebuyck…his outward belief never seems to waiver.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Winnipeg Jets training camp: Connor Hellebuyck, Mark Scheifele speak and more from Day 1. (Paywall). Feels like this is a civil procedure class as I quibble with Murat’s counting of days. To me day 1 was on Wednesday but he’s referencing it as yesterday since that’s when players first hit the ice. Regardless of the semantics (and as everyone knows I’m anti-semantic*) Murat gives his thoughts on a newsy day in Jetsland on Thursday and my poor joking aside there are lots of good nuggets in this article covering the above as well as Nikolaj Ehlers, Nate Schmidt and individual player (Salomonsson, Lambert, Samberg, Stanley, Pionk, Stewart, Bauer & Reichel). (*As much as I’d like to claim this as my line this was a beauty of the late NBA Commish David Stern).

CBC: Despite cloudy futures, Hellebuyck and Scheifele focused on Winnipeg Jets’ upcoming season. Not much else they can control at this point other than what is in front of them.

Jets video:

TSN: Both Flames and Jets have a lot to figure out with their pending UFAsTSN’s Salim Valji and John Lu join SportsCentre to discuss the Flames and Jets players who are pending unrestricted free agents at the end of the season, the impression that both Connor Hellebuyck and Mark Scheifele gave when they spoke to the media Thursday, and if Elias Lindstrom plans to stay with the Flames long-term.

TSN: Why the silent treatment for Scheifele and LindholmWinnipeg’s Mark Scheifele and Calgary’s Elias Lindholm are both free agents at season’s end, and both players have said that contract talks with their clubs have gone cold. Is it a smart move for the Jets and Flames to take a slow approach? Has Connor Hellebuyck drawn a line in the sand with Winnipeg? 7-Eleven That’s Hockey’s Gino Reda and Frankie Corrado have more.

Winnipeg Sports Talk: Jets training camp top storylines with Dan Robertson. Andrew “Hustler” Paterson is joined by Jets on TSN play-by-play voice Dan Robertson for a discussion on the top storylines heading into Winnipeg Jets training camp.
