Note: The Jets went into New York City and thankfully for them Connor Hellebuyck wasn’t still tired from the 29 shots he faced the night prior in New Jersey because the number one netminder of Winnipeg made 50 more in the 4-1 win for his team over the Rangers. While it may have felt it all occurred in the game last night Hellebuyck hit a milestone making his 13,000th save in the NHL. Since he joined Winnipeg in 2015-16 no goalie has faced more shots (what say you about that?). The Jets are off today. They conclude their four-game road trip tomorrow against the Islanders.
Note II: The Moose were also in action on holiday Monday as they looked to get back on track after suffering a shootout loss to the Griffins on Sunday. Unlike in their previous games they struck first courtesy of a shorthanded goal by Kristian Reichel and didn’t look back as they rolled to another win. They improved to 27-16-3-3 on the season with their 5-1 win over the Griffins to run their points streak to seven games (5-0-1-1). They are off today. They are set to practice tomorrow as they prepare to host the Admirals on Thursday.
Note III: The Ice completed the trifecta of winning for the hockey clubs of Winnipeg as they picked up their seventh straight victory courtesy of a 4-2 defeat of the Broncos in Swift Current. They next head to Calgary where they will take on the Hitmen on Wednesday.
Jets news:
Winnipeg Free Press: Trouba taking chomp out of Big Apple. (Paywall). Mike caught up with the 2012 1st rounder in a wide-ranging chat including reflections on his teammates here in Winnipeg.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Jets trade deadline dilemma: Does it make sense to move a promising young player? (Paywall). I could be wrong but the only way I see Kevin Cheveldayoff trading a future piece (whether it is a Perfetti or Lambert or Lucius, etc) is if he gets a player with term back. For example a Meier deal for the Jets only happens if there is an extension in place.
Sportsnet: Hellebuyck wills Jets to victory with 50-save, virtuoso performance vs. Rangers. Wieber was front row (not literally) to witness that performance by Connor Hellebuyck and he filed this report from the road.
Winnipeg Sun: GRAND LARCENY: Hellebuyck robs Rangers to carry Jets to win. Good on Scott for looking up NY penal code because that performance by the Jets netminder should have him brought before a tribunal it was so devious.
Winnipeg Free Press: Hellebuyck’s Broadway performance backstops Jets to 4-1 win over Rangers. (Paywall). Mike was inside the world’s most famous arena and he filed this story from MSG.
New York Post: Rangers can’t overcome early deficit as point streak ends with loss to Jets. While the Jets opponent have been hot there has been a common theme of late in their games. Read about last night’s contest from the perspective of a writer that covers New York.
Sportsnet: Could Timo Meier be a fit with the Winnipeg Jets? Timo Meier could be a fit for all 32 NHL teams including San Jose so that headline is a bit Captain Obvious. The article has some of the chat from the 32 Thoughts Podcast with Friedman speculating that the Jets could use Meier. Again seems clear they could.
Jets video:
Sportsnet: Jets’ Hellebuyck showed why he’s deserving of Vezina with 50-save performance vs. Rangers. The Hockey Central panel broke down the Winnipeg Jets’ 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers, most importantly goaltender Connor Hellebuyck’s performance, stopping 50/51 shots from the high-powered Rangers offence.
