The Moose win streak became a points streak after they lost to the Griffins last night in a shootout. Still some lineup question marks for the AHL club of Winnipeg as head coach Mark Morrison indicated after the game that Cole Maier and Alex Limoges were both day-to-day.
A few changes from yesterday’s game as captain Jimmy Oligny made his home season debut. Jets prospect Tyrel Bauer also back in. Out came out Ashton Sautner & Dean Stewart. There were no changes at forward with Alex Limoges & Cole Maier remain out. Oskari Salminen started.
Malott – Toninato – Harkins
Jonsson-Fjällby – Bongiovanni – Reichel
Polei – Meireles – Boland
Jones – Nikkanen – Torgersson
Chisholm – Gawanke
Heinola – Stewart
Sautner – Lundmark
Taking penalties isn’t ideal to start a game but when you can score a shorthanded marker it makes it easier to handle as Kristian Reichel finished off a beauty sequence from a pair of Finns in Ville Heinola and Henri Nikkanen.
Axel Jonsson-Fjallby has three goals in four games for the Moose as they took advantage of a Griffins turnover to make it a 2-0 game with him depositing a Nicholas Jones pass into the Grand Rapids net.
Eventually Moose captain Jimmy Oligny will find a dance partner. He tried unsuccessfully in the 1st and 2nd periods.
Jets prospect Daniel Torgersson looked almost sheepish after this one found the back of the net.
The Moose restored their three goal advantage courtesy of another excellent sequence by the Finnish duo of Heinola and Nikkanen. This time is was Vile Heinola who hit Henri Nikkanen with a long-range pass which was followed by the 2019 4th rounder feathering a pass over to Jeff Malott breaking his goalless streak with this re-direction and making it a 4-1 game.
While I am traditionally an avowed wave hater when it is done by kids I am pro wave and they had a nice 3rd period one going.
What a move by Jets prospect Daniel Torgersson to set up a Tyler Boland goal to make it a 5-1 hockey game.
The Moose improve to 27-16-3-3 with their 5-1 win over the Griffins to run their points streak to seven games (5-0-1-1).
Over 7000 fans here in Winnipeg watching Jets prospects get it done.
Since it was Super Hero Day we had to ask who are the top picks from the folks we spoke with post-game and they were:
Ville Heinola: Batman
Jeff Malott: Thor
Assistant coach Nolan Baumgartner: Hulk
