Note: There are still plenty of RFAs in need of a new contract and some of those contracts could get done this week. Perhaps the Jets will also announce the additional assistant coaches that will be added to the bench. Update: Today was in fact the day as two assistant coaches have been added to the bench. The Moose also got a pair of new additions this morning.
Note II: Where will you be on October 15th? Turns out I’ll be at Canada Life watching Moose & IceHogs kick off the 2022-23 AHL season at the Manitoba home opener. Maybe we even have tickets to giveaway. The rest of Moose schedule comes out today so stay tuned for that.
Jets news:
Winnipeg Free Press: Home isn’t where Jets’ heart is. (Paywall). While it could be true that players like Conor Geekie or Carson Lambos would last longer in Jets uniforms than others the Jets haven’t been prevented from keeping U.S. born foundational players like Connor Hellebuyck or Kyle Connor to sign long-term deals or a guy like Nikolaj Ehlers from Denmark sticking around on the prairies.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Pierre-Luc Dubois, Mark Scheifele and the Winnipeg Jets’ fading dream of two top centres. (Paywall). Remember the fan fare when the Jets dealt away a pure goal scorer like Patrik Laine but the prevailing wisdom was you required centre depth to win the Stanley Cup. The Jets may soon face themselves with an absence of both.
Daily Faceoff: Woe Canada: Why it’s harder than ever for Canadian NHL teams to win the Stanley Cup. It is somewhat surprising that the NHL still doesn’t factor in things like tax advantages or cost of living in terms of trying to equalize markets.
The Hockey News: Speculation continues to link Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Canadiens. This does feel like a big build up for nothing. I have a sneaking suspicion this may just peter itself out as we enter the dog days of summer.
