Jets news:

Michigan Tech University:  Hockey draftees will report to school.  Always interesting to read how the late draft picks find out about their selection.  Sounds like Phillips is pumped about being property of the Jets.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Chevy, Jets have money to spendThe Jets still have a number of free agents to sign so their cap space is likely to increase soon enough.  However spending money for the sake of spending money on expensive free agents doesn’t guarantee success (see 2011-12 Buffalo Sabres, 4th highest payroll and no playoffs).

Winnipeg Free Press:  Take a chance on TootsHe is looking to prove to folks in the NHL that he still has the drive to succeed in this league.  The Jets need high level scoring talent, so would Tootoo be a good addition to the team?  Or would he just fill a roll which the Jets could have filled by some of their younger talent in the AHL?

CBC:  Arts groups survive the JetsLooks like the return of the Jets didn’t force the city to divert all available disposable income towards the Jets as many “experts” from outside our city predicted.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

AHL.com:  2011-12 excellence award winnersThe IceCaps COO Glenn Stanford has been named the winner of the James C. Hendy Memorial Award as the outstanding executive in the American Hockey League for 2011-12.   He had a huge task and was up to the challenge of handling the responsibilities.

General NHL news:

Los Angeles Daily News:  Kings goalie Quick will ink 10-year contract extension.  Signing a goalie to a long term deal always works out for the team….doesn’t it?

Arizona Republic:  Judge rules in favor of Glendale’s Phoenix Coyotes dealDoes anyone actually believe this is done?  Of course not.  Which will be settled first, the NHL and NHLPA agreeing to a CBA deal or the Coyotes situation being resolved?

Philadelphia Inquirer:  Parise to Pens would be Flyers’ worst nightmareAdding Parise will add another dimension to the Battle of Pennsylvania.

Vancouver Sun:  Canucks $12m deal nets Cory Schneider for three yearsDespite concerns that others GMs would successfully thwart the Canucks plans, they got their tender of the future signed.  Now what do they do with Roberto Luongo?

Boston Globe:  Tuukka Rask agrees to one-year, $3.5 million extensionPlaying it cautious in advance of next year’s negotiation.
