Note: This is day 106 since the NHL hit the pause button on the 2019-20 season.
Note II: The road back to the NHL from injury can be a long one. Bryan Little (Nov 5th) and Mark Letestu (Oct 13th) haven’t played in a long time. Might either be a player in a potential play-in series against the Flames? Paul Maurice was asked this question and here was his response.
Note III: We’ll be doing another Illegal Curve Hockey Zoomcast/CurveCast this evening and will be joined by Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press. Be sure to follow us on YouTube (hit that subscribe button) for the latest episode.
Jets news:
Ilta-Sanomat: Patrik Laine takes it easy: “I don’t know anything about anything”. (Article in Finnish). The google translate doesn’t exactly work fantastically but it gives you enough to see that the Jets Finnish sniper doesn’t yet have a plan in place (or at least one he is willing to share) for his return. He seems pretty casual about it which isn’t out of character for the talented forward.
ESPN: Every NHL team’s most hyped prospect of the past 30 years. No shocker which Jets prospect was selected. Coincidentally yesterday was the four year anniversary of Winnipeg taking Patrik Laine with the 2nd overall pick in Buffalo at the 2016 NHL Draft.
The Athletic LA: Examining the top candidates to coach the AHL’s Ontario Reign. (Paywall). If you are wondering why this article would be listed under Jets links it is because current Winnipeg associate coach Jamie Kompon is mentioned as a possible candidate. He spent six seasons with the Kings organization which included winning a Stanley Cup back in 2011-12. Might the Jets be down two coaches after this season?
Jets video:
Sports and Moore: Logan Shaw on fatherhood, resumption of NHL season and earning another contract. 27 year old Logan Shaw says everything happens for a reason and when Covid-19 forced the suspension of the NHL season, he had the chance to go home to Glace Bay and witness the birth of his first child. Winnipeg Jets forward is back in Halifax training for a hopeful July 10th training camp start. Despite some NHLers expressing a concern about retrurning to the rinks, Shaw is more than ready to get back. With 200+ NHL games under his belt, the former Cape Breton Eagle wants to win a Stanley Cup and isn’t taking anything for granted as he is in final year of his contract with Jets.
NHL news:
Sportsnet: Road to NHL’s return gets bumpier as more players arrive from abroad. Add guys from Finland and Sweden to the collective pot.
TSN: Older coaches weigh in on NHL’s Return to Play. Definitely a factor that is needing serious consideration.
