Note: This is day 62 since the NHL and AHL hit the pause button on their respective 2019-20 seasons. Of course we now know that as of yesterday the AHL has cancelled their 2019-20 season so we are now strictly on NHL watch.
Note II: With the Moose season being cancelled I took a look back at some of the bright points as well as some of the notable moments of the 2019-20 season. Manitoba head coach Pascal Vincent spoke for about 25 minutes on Monday afternoon about the cancellation of the season, the impact of the pandemic, Jets prospect development and quite a bit more.
Jets news:
The Athletic Winnipeg: Backup goalie targets for the Jets in free agency or trade. (Paywall – 90 day free option). Ken looks at the options for the Jets both internally and externally for next season’s backup to Connor Hellebuyck. Lots of options including an out of the box Jussi Olkinuora name drop. Of course if Olkinuora signs a deal with Winnipeg he would have more than enough for a $5 foot long.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Q&A with Grant Clitsome: On forced retirement and guiding athletes post-career. (Paywall – 90 day free option). Murat had a chance to catch up with the former Jets D man.
Jets video:
Nordjyske: Walk ‘n talk with Nikolaj Ehlers. If you’ve missed hearing from the Dynamic Dane then check out this interesting video as Nikolaj Ehlers gets interviewed while walking around his hometown of Aalborg in Denmark. For the record they are chatting in Danish so unless you’ve got that northern European dialect in your repertoire you may just pick out the occasional word like Winnipeg or Connor McDavid.
HV71: David Gustafsson on the road from HV71’s U16 to the NHL. Sticking in Europe and heading about six hours due east of Nikolaj Ehlers is Jönköping where David Gustafsson played for HV71. His old squad caught up with him in this video to talk about his path to the NHL. Like the above video on Ehlers this one will require you to have a working understanding of a language other than English as it is conducted entirely in Swedish.
Jets audio:
The Chirp: Episode #35 of The Chirp With Daren Millard. In today’s episode, they double dip with two current NHL coaches. Paul Maurice and Pete DeBoer have a relationship that runs much deeper than just being two fo the best NHL head coaches in the league. Pete and Paul reminince on their early relationship in hockey, the Windsor Spitfires hockey incubator, Jim Rutherford’s influence, and Paul explains coaching in the NHL at the ripe age of 27. Pete and Paul trade aspects of their coaching style they want to adopt from one another and sing each other’s praises. We close with what a playoff series would be like between the two, dealing with the media, working in the media, fashion sense behind an NHL bench, being superstitious, and what they have learned from their difficult seasons.
Moose news:
Winnipeg Sun: Season cancelled, but Moose boss thinking of home. While we here in Manitoba have been spared the large scale numbers that other provinces have experienced Pascal Vincent’s birth place of Quebec has extremely high numbers and the Moose head coach has many family members back in la belle province.
