Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Latest Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose news.

Note:  The Jets are back on the ice today as they get ready to end this six game homestand with a Saturday night day against the red-hot Calgary Flames.  The Jets hit the ice at 11 AM for practice at the MTS Centre.

Note II:  The Moose have another game day tonight at the MTS Centre following last night’s disappointing 4-3 loss to division rival Charlotte.  The team will have a morning skate today at the IcePlex at 10 AM with puck drop at 7 pm.

Jets news:

ESPN:  Hot or Not – Mark Scheifele cracks ESPN latest under-24 rankings.   Lots of talk about 55 becoming more recognized around the NHL for his accomplishments this season.

Sportsnet:  If Jets want to make the playoffs they need better goaltending Feels like this article would have been more appropriate in January or even February as opposed to March where it feels too little, too late at this point.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets could call on the next wave.  Personally I don’t see the value in calling up your top prospects to play bottom six minutes and situations instead of their playing top line minutes and all situations (PK/PP/Late in game, etc) in the AHL.  Just my opinion but I’d leave Connor, Roslovic and Comrie with the Moose for the rest of the year.

Illegal Curve:  Tom Sestito suspended four games for hit on Enstorm.  Considering he hadn’t played previous to Wednesday’s game since November 16th I’m fairly certain the impact of his “loss” to the roster will be minimal.  We should know today how long Enstrom will be out for.

Sportsnet:  Five NHL coaches on the hot seat as the season winds down.  While he isn’t the top of the list the Jets bench boss cracked this one.  Don’t think it is happening but I could be wrong.

TSN:  Laine much more than a one-dimensional sniper.  Folks in this province won’t be upset reading about the Jets top rookie.

TSN: ‘This is old school hockey’. (Video).  NHL Insider Darren Dreger and Martin Biron weigh in on the Penguins bringing up Tom Sestito for one game and his actions against the Jets Tobias Enstrom.

Jets audio:

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Laine an underrated playmaker.  Travis Yost joins Hustler & Lawless to explain why Patrik Laine’s playmaking ability, in addition to his prolific goal scoring, should weigh the Calder Trophy race in the Jets’ rookie’s favour.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  What gets accomplished with a one-dimensional player?  Ray Ferraro joins Hustler & Lawless to discuss the fight- and penalty-filled Pittsburgh Penguins-Winnipeg Jets game Wednesday night, and the philosophy of dressing a so-called ‘goon’ for a contentious game.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Sestito’s job was done after Thorburn fight.  TSN 1290 Jets Analyst Shane Hnidy speaks to Rick Ralph about the Jets loss to the Penguins, Tom Sestito’s hit on Toby Enstrom and the fights in the first period.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  It was retro night at MTS Centre.  Rick Ralph discusses the fights in the first period of the Jets vs. Penguins game and wonders why Blake Wheeler would fight Malkin, and why Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan would put Tom Sestito in the game.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Hellebuyck not to blame for Penguins loss.  Voice of the Jets Dennis Beyak dropped by the Big Show to break down a wild one at MTS Centre between Winnipeg and Pittsburgh including the Blake Wheeler vs Evgeni Malkin fight, Tom Sestito’s game ejection and why despite allowing 5 goals on 15 shots, Connor Hellebuyck was not at fault in the club’s loss to the Penguins.

Moose news:

Illegal Curve:  Moose can’t solve Checkers in 4-3 loss.  Moose dropped opener of this eight game home stand. Recap includes goal summary and quick player hits.  Post-game audio: Brandon Tanev, Kevin Czuczman, Brendan Lemieux and Coach Vincent.

Global News:  Charlotte Checkers hang on to beat Manitoba Moose.  Russ provides his breakdown of the game.  Includes post-game video.

Official Manitoba site:  Kevin Czuczman had a three point night, but Moose came up short on home ice.  Includes a game story, quick hits and post-game quotes.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Moose’s Comrie coming along just fine.  (Paywall).  Mike has been writing some really interesting articles on the Moose this season and this is an example of another good one.  Lots of insight into one of the top goalie prospects not currently in the NHL.
