Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel with latest on Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey & Logan Stanley

One thing we saw in the first round series between the Jets and Blues was the gameplan for St. Louis was to pound Winnipeg whenever they could do so.

Re: Mark Scheifele

The first big consequences was knocking Mark Scheifele out of Game 5 after just one period of play. Although the nature of what took him out was disputed between the two bench bosses.

We know he skated on his own before the team left for St. Louis ahead of Game 6 although after teasing about his potential availability head coach Scott Arniel confirmed that Scheifele would not make the trip with them.

But then the day before Game 7 he was skating with assistant coach Marty Johnson creating some hope amongst fans that he could be a player for the biggest game of the season. It was not to be as he missed morning skate on Sunday and was declared not an option for it.

Winnipeg went on to win the game. The nature of the injury has remained a mystery.

With regards to Logan Stanley we don’t know what took him out in Game 6 but he wasn’t on the ice for morning skate ahead of Game 7. He was just unavailable.

Re: Josh Morrissey

The Jets won Game 7 on Sunday night to take the first round series with the Blues and get themselves a chance to play the Stars in the second round which gets underway on Wednesday night. But the series took a toll on both clubs with Winnipeg losing top centre Mark Scheifele (latest here) in Game 5 and then top defenceman Josh Morrissey in Game 7 after just two minutes of play in the 1st period.

It was clear that the St. Louis mantra in the series was to make Winnipeg pay and they targeted Morrissey at every opportunity they could to get their licks in. He was on the receiving end of a hit which catches his shoulder by Oskar Sundqvist which had him feeling the effects of the hit.

The next shift he was on the ice he attempted to lay a hit on Mathieu Joseph but appeared to get the worst of it.

That would be his last time on the ice in Game 7.

Which brings us to today. With the focus shifting to the Stars the Jets held an optional skate.

We saw all three players skating in yellow, non-contact jerseys. They are all considered day-to-day and Arniel wanted to see how they wake up tomorrow. He said today was the first day on the ice for Morrissey and Stanley while Scheifele has been skating including yesterday. He reluctantly conceded they would be considered game-time decisions.
